The Photon is a product photography “light tent” updated for the 21st century

The humble light tent is both loved and loathed by product photographers all over the world. On the one hand, it’s a great way to get some quick and easy, relatively clean shots of small products for eBay or your online store. But on the other, they don’t exactly offer the kind of control that a lot of product photographers strive for.

Well, the light tent has seen a technological upgrade. This is the Photon, which is essentially three customisable light panels that cover your products which you can control from your phone to emit whatever light pattern you desire. It’s just gone live on Kickstarter today, and it’s already pretty close to its goal in just a couple of hours.

The world’s fastest camera captures the movement of light at five trillion photos per second

High-speed cameras are certainly useful for slow motion, but they can also find their application in science. Elias Kristensson and Andreas Ehn, researchers at Swedish Lund University, have revealed the world’s fastest high-speed camera. It’s able to capture as many as five trillion frames per second. This sounds astonishing only when you try to read this number, and what’s especially impressive is that camera can visualize the movement of light. It can capture the events as short as 0.2 trillionths of a second.

To demonstrate the speed of this camera, the researchers filmed a group of photons. They are traveling a distance of a paper’s thickness at 671 million mph. Yet, this camera makes it seem as if they’re moving slowly.

This Camera Uses Lasers To See Around Corners

Whether one is trying to photograph far away objects with a massive telephoto lens or using a microscope to document the tiny creatures that surround us, the rule is simple – if you can see it, you can photograph it.

It turns out, however, that objects don’t need to be visible to the lens in order for the camera to “see” them, as a research team from Scotland recently demonstrated.

A first of its kind camera is able to spot and track moving objects around corners in real time using short pulses of light from a laser beam.
