Things that make you a cocky photographer

Over the years I’ve joked frequently with my best friend Marc and my brother about things that are cocky in life.  We sort of have this ongoing dialog pointing out cocky things and cocky people in the world, which is pretty cocky of us. They’ve given me a lot of shit since I became a photographer a decade ago pointing out how cocky our industry is and poking fun at me for my share of cocky moments like having an army of scarfs, our bio picture, and much much more.  Typically you think of athletes or celebrities as being cocky, and of course chefs, but don’t discount photographers.

I figured it was about time to address these cocky aspects of photography. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rules so I’ve pointed them out. If I offend you here please don’t take me serious, I’m just a silly dude saying silly things. If you are guilty of 3 or more of these things, consider yourself cocky.

“Everyone’s a photographer nowadays.” How many times have you heard this phrase? This video from Erik Wahlstrom addresses it, and deals with one question I’ve been thinking a lot – in this era when photography’s so available, what makes a photographer? If “everyone is a photographer,” is anyone?

This question has been on my mind a lot, and I never came up with a straightforward answer. I’m sure I’m a person some photographers would scoff at and say the phrase above. On the other hand, I think the same for some camera owners who present themselves as photographers. Everyone’s taking photos today, that’s for sure. But who, among all these people, can call themselves a photographer?

Yup, you read it right. A couple asked a photographer if he could add a clause that guarantees a refund in case they get divorced. A Reddit user justinwheelon shared a screenshot of this message online, and it caused plenty of reactions within the community.

How creative can you become as a photographer?

Are you pushing your limits or not even close to reaching them? When I read Steven Covey’s Book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, I wondered what those habits might be for us photographers. Effectiveness is important in photography, but given its artistic nature it’s all about creativity in the end.

Creativity is a sport. Everyone starts out in the Little League, some make it to the Major League and others end up in the Champions League. But what is it that raises your game? If you want extremely great photographs, you have to be willing to make it an extreme sport!

Police detains photographer under anti-terror laws for photographing Hove town hall

On Thursday, March 4, police detained professional photographer Eddie Mitchell for taking photos of Hove town hall in Sussex. The officers approached him and searched him under section 43 of the Terrorism Act, which gives officers the power to stop and search anyone they “reasonably suspects to be a terrorist.”

As the police confirm, they approached Mitchell while he was taking the photos. They searched him because he refused to provide identification and information. At the same time, Mitchel believes he didn’t break any laws, which is why he refused to identify himself and give more information to the officers.

Why photographers who work for free don’t affect your business

How many times have you heard (or pronounced) “Everyone is a photographer nowadays?” Indeed, there are so many people who bought a DSLR yesterday and created an “Uncle Bob Photography” Facebook page today. They throw photo shoots on super-low rates or often for free, and we all know it’s a big no-no in the industry.

You may feel like these people are harming the industry, taking away the clients and harming your business. Since they have such low rates or even don’t charge at all, it’s logical that you feel this way. But the truth is – they affect you less than you think.
