Panasonic is adding 5.9K 12-Bit RAW video to the S1 and S5 mirrorless cameras

Panasonic has announced an upcoming firmware for the Panasonic S1 and S5 that brings full-frame 5.9K 12-Bit RAW over HDMI video capabilities to the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR. There is a slight caveat for S1 users, though. S1 users will need to have purchased the $200 DMW-SFU2 Upgrade Software Key to unlock the extra video features of the S1 – but aside from that, it’s a free update for those users.

Owners of the Panasonic S5 will not have to buy that software key and will just get the features as soon as the firmware becomes available – which is expected on July 12th and will become available on the Panasonic Lumix Global Customer Support Website.

Camera Conspiracies isn’t happy as he explains “Why I’m leaving Pansonic FOREVER”

The whole “I’m switching from this brand to that brand” or “I’m done with whatever brand” videos have been done to death, but this one from Kasey at Camera Conspiracies popped up on my feed last night after the announcement of the Panasonic S5 and I have to say, it’s pretty hilarious.

He talks about Panasonic’s strengths (which are now mostly at least matched by the competition) as well as their weaknesses in the way that only Kasey can. The complaints mentioned in the video (the main one being the DFD autofocus) aren’t anything new, either. Panasonic’s flagship GH5 was plagued with autofocus issues and that was released three and a half years ago.

Panasonic has now officially announced the new S5 mirrorless camera

There wasn’t really much left for Panasonic to announce about their new Panasonic S5 mirrorless camera, except to confirm the price. The specs were leaked a couple of weeks ago, and the product photos leaked a few days ago. Even a price was sort-of leaked but not confirmed. But, now, announced it Panasonic has and it’s $1,997.99.

The Panasonic S5 is pretty much as we expected. It’s a 24.2-megapixel L mount camera that shoots 4K UHD video at up to 60fps, Full HD 1080p video at up to 180fps and it has a flippy out LCD, aiming it squarely at vloggers and content creators.

The Panasonic S5 product images leak ahead of this week’s official announcement

Well, it wasn’t much of a surprise, really, was it? Images always seem to leak a couple of days ahead of official announcements these days. This time, it’s the Panasonic S5’s turn. The complete specs for the new camera were leaked a couple of weeks ago, and Panasonic teased us with an S5 trailer in the last few days, stating that it’s aimed at content creators.

Now we know what the whole thing looks like, and it looks like they might’ve gotten it right. At least, it has a flippy out LCD and not the tilting LCD of its S1 cousins. But I don’t think they’re really aiming it at the entry-level with this one.

Panasonic releases teaser for the upcoming S5 – targets video content creators

Panasonic has released a teaser for the Panasonic S5 mirrorless camera to be officially announced on September 2nd. The teaser specifically targets video content creators. The video features Lumix ambassador, Todd White and doesn’t really reveal much about the camera, except alluding to its video-focused capabilities.

Not much is really revealed about the camera in the trailer, although they do show it sitting on top of the DJI Ronin-S. A mess of cables sticking out between them suggests that the two will be compatible with each other.

The Panasonic S5 will cost around $2,000 – full press text leaked

Well, I think this quashes any idea that Panasonic was looking to compete with the Canon EOS RP, Nikon Z5 and whatever Sony has up their sleeve. Nokishita is reporting that the price for the upcoming Panasonic S5 will be $1,997.99 (or $2,297.99 for the S5 kit that includes a lens – although they haven’t stated which lens).

They’ve also leaked the press text for the announcement, which states that the Panasonic S5 has been “designed especially for content creators”. Let’s hope that means it has the flippy out LCD of Panasonic’s Micro Four Thirds cameras, and not the tilting LCD of the other full-frame L mount bodies.

B&H has put up a listing for the new Panasonic S5 mirrorless camera. There’s no mention of a price or any specifications, just a “Notify when available” link and an image stating that there’ll be an announcement at 10am EDT/7am PDT on September 2nd, 2020. The B&H listing also states that the pre-orders begin at the same time and date.

The first photo of what purports to be the upcoming Panasonic S5 has leaked. The image doesn’t show much detail, and I’ve brightened it up a little above to help see things a little more clearly.

Perhaps it’s part of a teaser campaign that’ll be running in the days leading up to the official announcement. That would make sense, given how dark the original image is below. It comes via Nokishita, naturally, and follows up the complete specs leak that came out recently.

Panasonic S5 coming in September – Here are the leaked specs and it’s a bit of a video beast

A number of websites are now reporting that we can expect an announcement for Panasonic’s new entry-level full-frame S5 mirrorless camera as soon as next week. Not only that, but the complete specs for the Panasonic S5 have already leaked, courtesy of Nokishita and it looks pretty decent.

According to the leaked specs, the Panasonic S5 will house a 24.2-megapixel sensor, offer 14+ stops of dynamic range with Face, Eye, Body and Animal autofocus tracking, exposure and focus bracketing, and shoot full resolution raws at up to 7 frames per second. But where it really shines are its video capabilities – which are pretty awesome for an entry-level camera.

Panasonic S5 entry-level full-frame L mount camera registered at retailers

It seems that the fives are all around lately. Nikon just announced the Z5, there are rumours that Sony is getting ready to announce an A5 (or A6) and now, according to Nokishita, it seems that Panasonic is preparing to launch the S5 – an entry-level full-frame L mount mirrorless camera to compete with the likes of the Nikon Z5 and Canon EOS RP.

They say that the Lumix S5 body along with a kit containing the S5 and a 20-60mm kit lens have been registered at “overseas retailers”. Obviously, “overseas” just means “not China”, but they don’t say exactly where in the world they’ve been registered.
