A video from Ordinary Filmmaker has popped up on YouTube with information about an upcoming Panasonic camera. It’s not the S1 II announcement that many of us were perhaps expecting but an update to Panasonic’s video-centric camera, the S1H. Yes, that’s right, it seems the next camera on Panasonic’s list will be the S1H II. Normally, such videos don’t get much attention from us, but he has been right before.

Amongst the highlights of the leak are a 50-megapixel(ish) resolution sensor capable of shooting 8K video at up to 60 frames per second and 8K and 6K ProRes RAW. Of course, the headline feature is Panasonic’s new phase-detect autofocus system, first introduced on the S5 II. And yes, that’s coming to the S1H II as well.

Panasonic recently announced that they had a bunch of new firmware updates coming for their full-frame mirrorless lineup, including their newest addition, the Panasonic S5. Of particular note was that it would allow the S5 to shoot 5.9K ProRes RAW when paired with the Atomos Ninja V. Well, now, Panasonic has released those updates and so has Atomos.

New firmware has been released today for all of Panasonic’s full-frame mirrorless cameras, including the S1, S1H, S1R and S5. They’ve also released new firmware updates for a couple of their Micro Four Thirds cameras, too, including the G9 and the G100/G110. There’s no ProRes RAW on the MFT cameras, though.

Recently, Panasonic announced that the Panasonic S1H mirrorless camera would receive a new firmware update on May 25th that would, amongst other things, add support for RAW over HDMI so that you could record 4K ProRes RAW to the Atomos Ninja V recorder. Well, it’s May 25th, the new firmware has dropped, but you can’t shoot ProRes RAW yet.

Panasonic and Atomos have released a joint statement stating that an “unforeseen technical issue” during the final round of beta testing requires a little more work. A release date for the updated update which includes ProRes RAW support will be released at a future unspecified day, at which point the new Atomos Ninja V AtomOS will be released, too.

How to trick Panasonic mirrorless cameras into thinking your APS-C lenses are full-frame

If you’re using Sigma EF mount lenses with the Sigma MC-21 on Panasonic’s full-frame mirrorless bodies, then your camera is likely going to be forced into APS-C or Super35 mode when attempting to shoot video. With some 3rd party lenses, you don’t get such a restriction and the camera will happily let you shoot full-frame – even if the projection circle doesn’t quite cover the sensor.

While it may seem like a strange thing to want to do, some APS-C lenses, like Sigma’s 18-35mm f/1.8 Art lens, will actually completely cover a full-frame sensor at certain focal lengths. In this video from Nate’s Film Tutorials, we learn how we can trick the Panasonic S1H into opening up that full-frame option.

The Panasonic S1H is a full-frame mirrorless camera aimed primarily at movie shooters. Thanks to its stellar video features, it has made it into the “big league.” It’s the first mirrorless camera to be certified by Netflix. In other words, it’s the only mirrorless camera Netflix allows to be used as a primary camera on productions. And since it’s on the same list with high-end movie cameras, it’s also the cheapest among them.

We all knew it was coming, but we never really knew for sure exactly when. May 31st came and went with nothing but crickets. But today seems to be a day for new gear announcements, so Panasonic has jumped on the bandwagon by announcing the new Panasonic Lumix S1H full-frame camera aimed at video shooters. For the stills folks, it’s a 24.2-megapixel L Mount mirrorless camera. But it’s video where things get interesting.

While it’s not the first, nor the cheapest, camera to shoot high-quality 6K footage, it is the first full-frame mirrorless camera to shoot 6K. And the Panasonic S1H shoots it at 24 frames per second and also offers 4:2:2 10-Bit 4K DCI and 4K UHD. But high-resolution video isn’t the only trick the S1H has up its sleeve.

They’re hoping to release it in Autumn 2019, though, and is expected to have a price tag of around $4,000.
