Panasonic has announced a major firmware update for the Panasonic GH6. The new Version 2.0 firmware adds a couple of features that customers have been asking for since the camera was first announced. Namely, 4K 60fps ProRes 422 HQ capture internally as well as full resolution 5.7K and 4K DCI RAW over HDMI output at 60fps and 120fps respectively. And for anamorphic shooters, you also get 5.8K and 4.4K RAW over HDMI.

For 5.7K video, you get up to 60fps and for 4K, you get up to 120fps raw over HDMI. For anamorphic, it’s half that rate. So, 5.8K goes up to 30fps while 4.4K is limited to 60fps. Naturally, you’ll need an external recorder capable of capturing these framerates and resolutions, which means the Atomos Ninja V or Ninja V+ devices if you want to record ProRes RAW.

It’s been a while since the hype started to be built around the Panasonic Lumix GH6. The rumors started way back in May 2020, and the camera was officially announced on 21 February this year.

Well, now that’s it’s finally available to preorder, some new issues have appeared. According to Panasonic, the demand for the company’s new camera is so huge, that there may be some shipping delays.

Ok, you can stop speculating and guessing now. Panasonic has finally officially announced the new Panasonic Lumix GH6 Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera. Rather than a slight refresh like the Panasonic GH5 Mark II, the GH6 presents a pretty major upgrade over the GH5 for those that need it, with a new 25.2-megapixel sensor, 7.5 stops of IBIS and 5.7K video at up to 60 frames per second.

It comes five years after the release of the Panasonic Lumix GH5 and it represented a significant step up in Panasonic’s video capabilities over its predecessor. The GH6 seem to be doing the same this time around. As well as seeing a resolution boost for both stills and video, we also see 4K video at up to 120 frames per second and 1080p up to a very impressive 300 frames per second.

Complete leaked specs and video of the Panasonic GH6 show 7.5 stops IBIS, 300fps and ProRes video

Well, it seems a lot of info about the Panasonic GH6 was leaked overnight – and that Digicame-Info appears to be the new Nokishita. We went from a handful of new specs to the (almost) entire specs sheet being posted online and yesterday’s photos leak has turned into a full video from an Asian YouTuber who jumped the gun a little early, complete with English translation commentary.

From watching the video and reading the specs sheet, it looks like there’s good news and bad. For a start, it’s heavy, weighing in at 823g with battery and SD card and there’s no phase-detection AF. But, it offers ProRes recording internally and the 25-megapixel sensor is capable of seeing up to 300 frames per second.

First images of upcoming Panasonic GH6 leak ahead of next week’s announcement

Scheduled to be officially announced next week on the 21st, images of the upcoming Panasonic GH6 have leaked a little early. Two images have gotten out so far courtesy of Asobinet which show the front of the camera as well as what appears to possibly be cooling vents. Whether or not it’s active cooled or not is obviously unknown, but it seems Panasonic is taking potential overheating issues seriously.

While there haven’t really been any specs announced (or leaked) yet for the GH6, the information given during the GH6 development announcement did suggest that it’s going to be a significant upgrade over the GH5 (and GH5 Mark II), offering 5.7K video at up to 60 frames per second as well as 4K at 120fps. So, keeping it cool will definitely be a priority.

Well, now we have a definite date for the upcoming Panasonic GH6 announcement and according to a post on the Lumix Facebook page, we don’t have to wait long. The official announcement is expected to come at 8pm Eastern on February 21st, 2022 (1am UTC on February 22nd).

Panasonic hasn’t said anything about the impending new camera, although it’s rumoured to be Panasonic’s first mirrorless camera to contain Phase Detection Autofocus instead of the slow, unreliable (at least for video) and only-works-with-Panasonic-lenses-and-not-3rd-party Depth from Defocus (DFD) system used in all of their other cameras.

Lumix kicks off 20th Anniversary by announcing that the GH6 is still under development

It’s the 20th anniversary of Panasonic’s Lumix brand of cameras this year. Today, in fact, is the 20th anniversary of their first cameras, the Lumix LC5 and F7. Lumix has come a long way in that time, and many have been expecting a Panasonic GH6 announcement today. According to a statement from Panasonic Japan,  though, it’s still in development.

Panasonic has launched a Lumix 20th anniversary website to celebrate the event, talking about not only the Lumix brand but Panasonic’s history with photography, which extends far beyond the last 20 years. It includes a number of innovations invented by Panasonic, like the world’s first optical image stabilisation system.

Panasonic GH6 camera passes Bluetooth certification – but don’t expect it any time soon

Panasonic has now registered its upcoming Panasonic GH6 Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera and completed its Bluetooth Qualification Process. It’s hardly surprising that the Panasonic GH6 would support Bluetooth 5, although this registration confirms that Panasonic is indeed working on it as promised and we’re not just going to be stuck with the mostly incrementally updated GH5 Mark II.

Still, this registration does not necessarily mean that the GH6 is going to come any time soon. Virtually no real specs of the GH6 have been released, beyond what Panasonic let out on its initial development announcement, and the only leaked info we’ve seen so far that looks even vaguely believable is that Panasonic might finally offer phase detection autofocus.

Rumour: Panasonic actually going to give the GH6 Phase Detect autofocus

Well, this is a bit of a surprise if true. Panasonic has long shunned other autofocus systems in favour of its proprietary “Depth from defocus” system used in its Micro Four Thirds cameras. And while Panasonic might be happy with it, many Panasonic users are not. But now it seems like Panasonic might actually be changing their tune if the above video is to be believed.

It was posted by Film Studi-O-taku Hi, based in Japan who says that the “magical camera company fairies” (which could mean he’s protecting his source or it could be completely made up) got word to him that the GH6 will include standard phase-detect autofocus.

Panasonic director, Yosuke Yamane, in a video posted to the Panasonic Lumix Video YouTube channel has amongst other things, explained the differences between the goals and target market for the Panasonic GH5 Mark II and the Panasonic GH6 Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras.

The video was actually posted on May 26th, the day after the official launch, although it seems to have gone largely unnoticed. But it dives a little deeper into how the Panasonic GH5 as a product is diverging into what is essentially two separate product lines aimed at different types of user. Filmmakers and YouTubers.
