Atomos has released the v10.68 firmware update for the Atomos Ninja V+ monitor recorder. The update now allows you to record 8K ProRes RAW in the Ninja V+ from the HDMI signal coming out of the Canon EOS R5. Of course, you also have to install the latest Canon EOS R5 v1.4.0 firmware, too, also just released today (according to Atomos) or yesterday (according to Canon on Windows) or last week (according to Canon for Mac users).

Regardless of the when, the Atomos update for the Ninja V+ only seems to add the 8K and 5K ProRes RAW video functionality for the EOS R5, although the new EOS R5 firmware update also makes a few other changes, too, including simultaneous video recording to two cards simultaneously.

The Atomos Ninja V has been a staple amongst video shooters wishing to work with Apple’s ProRes RAW – which isn’t surprising considering it supports pretty much every mirrorless camera out there capable of providing RAW over HDMI. But now it’s seen a new update to provide it with h.265 recording abilities.

The Ninja lineup also sees a couple of new additions today. The first is the Atomos Ninja V+, capable of shooting both 8K 30fps and 4K 120fps video in ProRes RAW. The other is the socially distanced Ninja Stream, capable of simultaneous ProRes and H.264/5 proxy recording while also beaming your video signal over WiFi, ethernet or live stream without the need for a PC.

Panasonic recently announced that they had a bunch of new firmware updates coming for their full-frame mirrorless lineup, including their newest addition, the Panasonic S5. Of particular note was that it would allow the S5 to shoot 5.9K ProRes RAW when paired with the Atomos Ninja V. Well, now, Panasonic has released those updates and so has Atomos.

New firmware has been released today for all of Panasonic’s full-frame mirrorless cameras, including the S1, S1H, S1R and S5. They’ve also released new firmware updates for a couple of their Micro Four Thirds cameras, too, including the G9 and the G100/G110. There’s no ProRes RAW on the MFT cameras, though.

Just a few days ago, Japan Industrial Partners, the company taking over Olympus’ Imaging division stated that they were going to start putting more of a focus on video. Well, it seems their focus has shifted sooner than anybody expected.

Today, Olympus has announced the development of a new firmware update, being created in collaboration with Atomos, to allow the Olympus OM-D E-M1X and OM-D E-M1 Mark III mirrorless cameras to output RAW over HDMI, allowing them to take advantage of ProRes RAW recording in the Atomos Ninja V.

Recently, Panasonic announced that the Panasonic S1H mirrorless camera would receive a new firmware update on May 25th that would, amongst other things, add support for RAW over HDMI so that you could record 4K ProRes RAW to the Atomos Ninja V recorder. Well, it’s May 25th, the new firmware has dropped, but you can’t shoot ProRes RAW yet.

Panasonic and Atomos have released a joint statement stating that an “unforeseen technical issue” during the final round of beta testing requires a little more work. A release date for the updated update which includes ProRes RAW support will be released at a future unspecified day, at which point the new Atomos Ninja V AtomOS will be released, too.

So, it was a paid upgrade, then Jeromy Young of Atomos told us it wasn’t, and now that Nikon has officially announced it, it is again. Starting today, you can ship off your Nikon Z6 or Z7 to Nikon USA to have it upgraded to output RAW over HDMI to a compatible Atomos recorder. But you’re going to have to pay $200 for it.

Nikon’s long-awaited firmware updates for RAW video support to come this week

It was way back in January that Nikon first announced that the Z6 and Z7 mirrorless cameras would be seeing raw over HDMI as well as CFexpress support. And Nikon mirrorless shooters have been waiting patiently (I’m being nice) ever since. It was teased again a few months ago when it was suggested that raw support would be a paid upgrade (it’s not, sort of).

Now it seems it might finally be getting released this week. At least, the raw part will, anyway, according to a post on Nikon Rumors. They say they’ve received confirmation from two different sources that Nikon will announce the new firmware at some point this week.

Our friends at Cinema5D had the chance to chat with Sigma recently at Inter Bee 2019 in China. Naturally, they chatted about the Sigma fp mirrorless camera. If you’ve not been keeping up, the fp is a camera capable of shooting full-frame 12-Bit CinemaDNG RAW. But those are huge files. So, other options are required for those who want to keep file sizes down or to be able to record RAW to an external device like the Atomos Ninja V.

Sigma says during the interview that a future firmware update coming in 2020 will add a LOG picture profile, and provide RAW video output over HDMI. They also say that if you do choose to shoot CinemaDNG, you will be able to play it back in-camera – something it can’t currently do.
