Nikon D3500

Nikon says the Z8 is both a D850 successor and a “baby Z9”

The recent announcement of the Nikon Z8 (buy here) has caused quite a bit of buzz. And for good reason. Even before the official announcement, it was expected to become the true successor to the Nikon D850 (buy here), not just in specs but in workflow and how it feels to shoot with it. The Nikon D850 was considered the best all-rounder Nikon DSLR for many different uses. So, the Z8 had some pretty big shoes to fill.

In a recent interview with Adam Waring at Digital Camera World, Nikon said that they had a lot of different options to consider when it came to developing the Z8, but that ultimately, its customers wanted what amounts to a “baby Z9”. Amongst other things, Nikon also says that the electronic shutter used in the Nikon Z9 (buy here) and Z8 are so fast that they keep up with the mechanical shutters of their predecessors.

Nikon has now officially discontinued the D3x00 and D5x00 product lines

Nikon has reportedly sent out official notices to stores stating that the Nikon D3x00 and D5x00 series product lines are now officially discontinued. This means that the D3500 and D5600 will be the final cameras in each of the two lines adding a little more weight to the recently resurfaced rumours of an impending Nikon Z30 announcement.

The Nikon D3500 and D5600 bodies themselves were listed as discontinued on the Nikon Japan website back in January, only a few days after the Nikon D5600 was hailed as the biggest selling DSLR in Japan in 2020. But it’s been known since 2019 that these cameras would not be getting replaced by new DSLR models.

“Nikon’s dropping 5 lines of SLRs” says DPReview’s Chris Nichols

During the recent first look video for the Canon EOS 90D and Canon EOS M6 Mark II over on DPReview, Chris Nichols let slip at around 6:45 in the video that Nikon is “dropping 5 lines of [D]SLRs”. This seems to suggest that Nikon believes that DSLRs are, for the most part, well and truly dead.

We already knew at the beginning of July that there were rumours Nikon was possibly planning to drop the D3x00 series, the D50xx series and that there would be no follow up to the D500. But now it appears two more lines of Nikon DSLRs are to be cancelled.

Nikon is killing off some of their DSLR product lines, rumour claims

A post has popped up on Nikon Rumors suggesting that Nikon is killing off some of their most popular DSLR lines. Specifically, the D3x00 and D5x00 series along with their “Pro” line of DX bodies, currently the Nikon D500. They say that they will “most likely” be replaced by mirrorless models.

It’s a bit of a bummer, although not entirely unexpected, really, and this transition seems mostly limited to their crop DSLRs at the moment. What does surprise me, though, is that they’re not killing off the D7x00 product line.

Although the launch of Nikon Z mirrorless cameras, lenses and the adapter is still under the spotlight, Nikon has just launched D3500. The new entry-level DSLR is a successor to the Nikon D3400. Although honestly doesn’t include many innovations over the previous model, there are some perks that might make you choose it over its predecessor.
