How to make money with photography

“Please could you tell me how to make money from photography?” This is a question I get asked quite often by email, a majority are students entering their adult working life and trying to figure it all out.

And yet I don’t think it’s the right approach when pursuing any passion to obsess about making money. Get a full-time job first to pay the bills, that’s my main advice. but don’t do it so long that it poisons your creativity, individuality and drive as there’s a very real risk of that happening.

We live in a terrifying world and the news tell us: just about anything out there is out to get us.

Fear is HOT right now.

So talking about being safe… Does hiding the Leica logo with tape actually serve a purpose?

What is the purpose of this strange behaviour?

Is it possible that one idiot did it and it just caught on?

What lenses should you use for the Sony A7 Series?

Following my recent post on the reasons why I switched from Micro Four Thirds to Full Frame mirrorless, I thought I should share my thoughts on lenses which work well for the A7 series.

As a Sony A7RII user, new to Sony, the choice of lenses is not far from infinite. This is both a good thing but also presents a challenge. Is so much choice… too much choice?

How I lost faith in micro four thirds and switched to Sony mirrorless

If you’re thinking about moving to micro four thirds or buying the E-M1 Mark II… maybe read this first, it may actually save you money down the line.
For the past year and a half I have been shooting both the top of the range MFT and A7RII on professional assignments. Sadly I ended up often quite frustrated by the poor low light performance of Oly’s cameras as well as the lack of 4K which most of my clients ask from me when I shoot for example cinemagraphs.

Therefore since December 2016, I’ve gone 100% for the Sony and dropped MFT altogether to cut my losses invested in this system as well as my cherished Ambassador status (which in reality meant very little).

The best lens for street photography

For street photography the choice of cameras and lenses is, simply put, huge.

So where do we start? What IS the best lens for street photography?

Whilst a lot of talented street photographers use camera phones or compact cameras for street photography and do a great job at it, this article will focus on prime lenses and the various focal lengths available to the street photographer using interchangeable lens systems. We’ll discuss how the choice affects everything from how the shot is created to how it affects how the final images look.

Why photography matters and how it helped me overcome depression

I kept this post as a draft for months unsure if I should publish it since it discusses things and events that aren’t very easy to share. Just like everything else I write, I hope it can inspire / help at least one person from my personal life experience.

People often ask me why I shoot and when it all started. For a very long time I found this to be one of the toughest questions to answer.

With photography as a creative outlet it’s pretty difficult and near impossible to narrow down to one particular date or one particular event when it all came together.

When you think about it we all, in one way or another, take photos from an early age, this holds even more truth today since all kids have access to their parent’s mobile phone if not their own.

Often people take photos early in life but they do it casually and don’t necessarily think “One day I’ll be a photographer”.

I see it more as a set of circumstances which all led to where I am today.

Culling photos – choosing your best photos

This post will probably sound harsh to some but it’s needed as street photography has a problem.

It may be because of a so-called renaissance in street photography in the past few years or just the fact it’s become fashionable but the sheer number of terrible photos is quite impressive.

It’s bad and the reason is often because people aren’t stringent enough when culling photos (choosing your best photos), too hastily posting online.

Many want to hear what others have to say immediately instead of simply trusting their ability to evaluate their own work.
