A photographer was killed and another man was seriously injured at the British Motocross Championships this Sunday. A rider came off his bike during a jump, and the bike crashed through a barrier made of hay bales, causing the tragedy.
I generally shoot on location, and those shoots often last a good 8 hours or so. When I tell people this, they typically sound shocked, wondering how a shoot can go on for so long. But 8 hours is nothing compared to what motorsport photographer Jamey Price has to deal with when shooting a 24-hour endurance sports car race.
In this 13-minute documentary, we get to take a peek inside a world where the photographer’s endurance is put to the test just as much as that of the cars. Narrated by Jamey, we see and hear about the work that goes into such an event, and how difficult it can be to keep up.
We all take risks for our art of some form or another. For some, that risk is getting into debt to satisfy gear lust. For others, the risks are a little more physical. And those physical risks often seem to present themselves for motor racing photographers and videographers. As this video clip just goes to show.
There’s not really any information to go along with the clip, but it appears to be a rally somewhere in Russia. Then we see Car number 50 hurtle around a corner, all four tyres off the ground, before losing control, barely missing a guy shooting video on the side lines, tumbling several times, finally landing in a ditch.
Kurt Bradley is a former competitive driver turned motorsports photographer. He’s shot top-level international racing events such as Formula 1, MotoGP, and WEC, but also attends regional track days and car shows, plus the X-Games.
Kurt has experience with photographing the unique setting of nighttime road racing. Few races go into the night – two of the most famous are the 24 Hours of Le Mans and 24 Hours of Daytona – but the visuals are one-of-a-kind. Kurt attended Daytona this year and was able to share some his insights from the race, which he shot for Jalopnik, a popular automotive blog.
