Model Mayhem restructures membership levels and limits Basic accounts

Model Mayhem, favorite among many creatives, has recently redefined its membership structure. Starting from this month, they have limited many perks they used to offer with the free account. This, in a way, forces you to pay for membership, at least if you want to reach more people and find more work.

While this move is promoted as an “improvement,” it’s not how photographers and models see it. Negative feedback comes from all over the place, and many photographers are reevaluating their decision to use this website further.

Many photographers and models tend to go to sites like Model Mayhem when looking for new people with which to collaborate, but such sites were built before the days where the majority weren’t browsing from mobile devices.

Most sites were slow to make the shift, but I’ve yet to come across any that are 100% mobile friendly (at least on iOS). Now, a new competitor, FStop.fm, enters the field aiming to put models and photographers together through a Tinder-like interface.

The case of Jane Doe No. 14 v. Internet Brands, Inc. is one that many were following with great interest, and Internet giants like eBay and Facebook told the court that the lawsuit would have a “chilling effect” on the Internet.

While what happened to Doe was tragic, she felt that Model Mayhem were responsible for not warning her of the dangers from other members on the website.

If you’re into any kind of photography that includes models, chances are you’ve heard of Model Mayhem.

Possibly the leading portfolio site in the industry, MM helps creatives find photographers, models, makeup artist and others to collaborate with. Unfortunately there seems to be quite a few shady characters with cameras out there and more than a fair share of unreliable models that don’t seem to have a concept of time. That is, if they even show up.

Hoping to regain members’ trust and boost its reputation in the industry, MM has launched a new two-way credit system called ‘Verified Credits’.
