Micron’s 1.5TB microSD cards cost more than diamonds

If you’re an international art thief dealing in jewels instead of cash, you might want to consider switching to a different currency. Pricing has finally become available for Micron’s 1.5TB i400 microSD cards, announced last June. Micron doesn’t appear to have actually made a price announcement yet, although listings have popped up at online wholesalers around the world.

The prices are enough to make your eyes water. The wholesale cost for a single card is $420 at Newark. Retail price bumps up to $556.05 on Mouser. And for that kind of money, you’re not even getting a super fast (for UHS-I) V30 card, either. These are Class 10, so you’re only guaranteed 10MB/sec sustained transfer speeds. Also, you’re going to be on about a two-month waiting list (at least).

Micron pushes through the 1TB barrier with the new Micron i400 1.5TB microSD card

Anybody who knows me knows I’m a fan of big storage, especially when it comes to small storage. After 1TB SD cards were first shown off at Photokina 2016, it took a couple of years to come to market. But in 2019, they did and we’ve reviewed both the SanDisk Extreme Pro 1TB microSD (review here) and the Silicon Power Superior 1TB microSD (review here) cards here on DIYP.

While 1TB microSD cards still seem pretty insane, the devices that support them can actually handle cards up to 2TB. The problem is, nobody’s gone past that 1TB barrier. Until now. Micron has announced their newest high-capacity microSD card, which clocks in a massive 1.5TB. But it’s not all great news (yet).

Massive 1TB microSD cards are insane and they’re a real thing now

The race for more and more storage on tiny little cards just keeps on trucking. Although SanDisk showed off a proof-of-concept 1TB SD card way back at Photokina 2016 and ProGrade announced their 1TB CFexpress cards last April, it wasn’t until recently that Lexar had released a 1TB memory SD card that you could actually buy.

Now, though, both SanDisk and Micron (the people who used to own Lexar) have beaten Lexar to the punch when it comes to scaling that down, having both announced their own 1TB microSD cards at Mobile World Congress 2019.

Since Micron sold memory card brand, Lexar to Longsys in China, people have been wondering what’s going on. Will they still keep making those favourite Lexar products? Will they bring out a new range? Or will they just take Lexar’s intellectual property, apply it to other products and not make memory cards at all?

Well, now it seems that we have our answer. Longsys has put out a statement saying that Lexar will be back in “full production” and shipping globally by the autumn.

Micron Technology has issued an announcement that they are discontinuing Lexar retail removable storage business. As they say, they are most likely to sell this part of the business, either partially or in whole. And the reason behind the decision is their attempts to focus on the “increasing opportunities in higher value markets and channels.”

Earlier today it was revealed by Kaspersky, a leading software security group, that the NSA has been using leading brand hard drives to spy on targets worldwide. In fact, they have been doing so since 2001.

While you most likely use a hard drive manufactured by one of the companies involved, chances are that you haven’t been a victim. Not that you’ve got any way of knowing…

Infected computers were found in over 30 countries, including Iran, Russia, Pakistan and China.
