Mavic 3

New firmware gives the DJI Mavic 3 the features that were promised at launch

After the success of the DJI Mavic 2 and the “collaboration” (pretty much an acquisition) with Hasselblad, many folks were excited to see what would come in updated Mavic 3 models. And when it was officially announced in November, many jumped on that pre-order bandwagon. But upon receiving their drones, a few were disappointed stating that many of the features promised in DJI’s marketing weren’t there.

DJI did say that they’d be releasing an update in January, but the consumer market has learned to not count its chickens in the electronics world when it comes to firmware updates. DJI has made good on their promise, though with a new v01.00.0500 firmware update, available to both Android and iOS devices as well as desktop users.

Watch as the DJI Mavic 3 goes through an extreme wind test and appears to win

One of the big downfalls of many drones is their inability to handle strong winds. It’s something that now seems to have become a mission for drone manufacturers to overcome. We’ve seen Sony’s video showing off their Air Peak drone in the wind tunnel and a Saildrone survive a Category 4 hurricane and now it’s DJI’s turn with the newly announced DJI Mavic 3.

In this video, DC Rainmaker puts the DJI Mavic 3 through its paces with a real-world high-speed wind test. With winds reaching up to 60kph (37.3mph) it seems to handle it with relative ease, continuing to produce some pretty steady footage. According to the official DJI specs, the DJI Mavic 3 has a limit of 43km/h – or around 27mph. As you can see from the video above, though, it seems to be capable of handling much higher.

Is the DJI Mavic 3’s 28x Hybrid Zoom dual camera setup really any good? Maybe

With the recent announcement of the new DJI Mavic 3, one of the big selling points was that new dual-camera system. The main camera is a 20-megapixel 4/3 CMOS sensor with a variable f/2.8-11 aperture and a 24mm equivalent focal length. The secondary camera is a 12-megapixel 1/2″ CMOS sensor with a 162mm equivalent lens and a fixed f/4.4 aperture.

DJI combines these two cameras allowing for a hybrid zoom system. But is it really all it’s cracked up to be? Especially when that second camera only shoots jpg and not RAW or DNG? Well, the folks at DroneXL posted a video that shows how it really looks to zoom on the DJI Mavic 3. And, it’s not amazing, but it’s pretty impressive.

DJI’s new Mavic 3 comes with dual cameras, 4/3″ sensor, 5.1K resolution and a $5K Cine version

DJI has now officially launched the new DJI Mavic 3 boasting better sensors, a dual-camera system, omnidirectional obstacle avoidance, smarter flight modes and longer flight times over the Mavic 2. DJI says that the Mavic 3 has been “redesigned from tip to tail” to take things up to the next level.

And it sure seems to have done that. It shoots 5.1K video at up to 50 frames per second with a large 4/3″ CMOS Hasselblad camera, 4K 120fps for high-quality slow-mo and features redesigned batteries that let you stay up in the air for a very impressive 46 minutes. Omnidirectional obstacle avoidance also sees potential issues from up to 200 metres away.

The first DJI Mavic 3 review has leaked on YouTube – announcement expected November 4th

If it’s not retailers jumping the gun or the manufacturers themselves, it’s YouTubers and this time it’s the DJI Mavic 3 again. There’s been a lot of hype over the DJI Ronin 4D and the new DJI Action 2, but DJI Mavic 3 chatter has been pretty mild until lately. Sure, there was rumour of an announcement two years ago, and there’s been a couple of leaks, including the complete specs, but other than that, it’s not been spoken about anywhere near as much as past DJI drone releases.

Well, now the first review has popped up a little early on YouTube (since removed), spotted by serial DJI leaker OsitaLV. Naturally, the video didn’t last online very long but a number of people, including Kanzhaji managed to grab some screenshots and even clips that have been reshared via social media. It also appears that DJI has now scheduled an announcement for November 4th at 10pm Eastern.

Complete DJI Mavic 3 features, specs and price leak ahead of official announcement

This one’s been rumoured for a long time, but the most recent leak at the end of August suggested an announcement date for either October 2021 or January 2021. I think from a business standpoint, October is more likely, given that nobody will be buying them up as Christmas presents in January, but now the entire specs appear to have leaked, suggesting that an official announcement may be imminent.

The leaks come via Twitter user @JasperEllens and the website DroneDJ, showing the complete specifications for two new upcoming DJI Mavic 3 drones. It looks like DJI’s dropped the “Pro” and “Zoom” monikers. One of the new models will simply be the “Mavic 3” and the other will be labelled “Cine” and features a built-in SSD.

Brazilian YouTube channel Dronemodelismo has leaked what they say are some specs for the upcoming DJI Mavic 3 drone. Dronemodelismo says they had access to exclusive information that came from a reliable source and while they weren’t allowed to show real photos of the drone, they did share some illustrations of what it will look like.

So, the big things first. According to the leak, it’ll contain a pair of Hasselblad cameras, including one with a 7x zoom and another below it capable of shooting 5.7K video with a 24mm equivalent f/2.8 lens. It will feature Apple ProRes raw support and contain 1TB of internal storage to save it all to, with over 40 minutes of flight time.

Looks like Canon isn’t the only one on fire when it comes to announcing new gear in 2020 (at least judging from the rumors). After a long break, it seems that we’ll see as many as three new drones from DJI this year. And according to the reports, the first one could hit the market in February.
