NASA has a brand new clean room at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. It’s where they’re building the new Mars 2020 rover. And NASA has set up a live streaming camera so you can watch them build it.
I don’t know if you’ll have a white Christmas in your area. But if there’s life on Mars – they certainly will. In this stunning photo recently released by the European Space Agency (ESA), you can see a crater full of “snow.” It’s actually the ice-filled Korolev crater, and it was recently sent to Earth by Mars Express orbiter.
When it comes to reflections of celestial objects on a water surface, we can usually take photos like this of the Sun or the Moon. But over these few days, Mars has been so bright that you can also capture its reflection on the ocean. Boston-based photographer Abdul Dremali did it and combined with the Milky Way, it sure looks awe-inspiring.
“We know more about the surface of Mars and Moon combined than we do of our own ocean floor.” Thanks to Ved Chirayath of NASA Ames Research Center, this might change in near future. He has developed a new camera tech that allows the scientists to explore the ocean floor from the air. This hardware and software technique is named fluid lensing, and it could enable NASA to look and map out all of the coastal ocean systems in the world.
With Space Oddity playing in the background, SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy has made a successful launch on 6 February from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The live stream was reportedly followed by more than three million people, and this historic launch is the hottest news all over the world. NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover has provided us with some spectacular (but also fun) photos so far. After capturing amazing Earth-like clouds, it has again captured a sight that might remind us of our home planet. The rover reached the top of Vera Rubin Ridge and captured photos that were stitched into a breathtaking panoramic landscape.
Last month, NASA’s Curiosity Rover captured a remarkable sight in the sky above Mars. It shot clear images of wispy cirrus clouds that look like those we have on Earth. While they’re common on our planet, they are very rare on the Red Planet, which is one of the things that make these images so important. What’s more, they reveal Mars’ distant past, when these clouds may have enabled the water to flow on the surface.
Of all the planets found in the Solar System, only five of the brightest planets – Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, can be seen with the naked eye.
While all five of these planets can be seen throughout most of the year, as of this morning they can all be seen simultaneously as they (mostly) align diagonally in the early morning sky.
Last time this happened was over a decade ago, so ready your cameras and plan your shots.
