LUT myths busted – What they can and can’t do for your footage

LUTs, or Look-Up Tables, were relatively unheard of until a few years ago. Now they’re everywhere. It’s like everybody has a LUT pack available for download. But, just as with Lightroom presets, LUTs are not a magic bullet. They can’t make a bad shot look amazing, and they can’t relight your scene.

This video from Casey Faris is a follow-up to an April Fool prank he posted at the beginning of this month. The prank was about the new Pegasus “Magic LUT”. It was an amusing video, but quite a few people fell for some of the things mentioned early on in the video. This time, he breaks LUTs right down to cover exactly what they can and can’t do.

An easy guide to colouring with LUTs in Adobe Premiere and DaVinci Resolve

Lookup Tables, or LUTs, are simply amazing. LUTs are like presets, but work across all platforms and software, for both video and stills. LUTs can be used for both colour correction, to bring cameras to a standard, and for giving your footage or images a desired “look”. But how do we use them?

In this video from Casey Faris, we see how to use LUTs for both correction and grading for video. Using both DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere Pro, Casey walks us through the whole process.

Create 3DLUTs in Photoshop to colour match multiple video cameras

One of the trickier aspects to shooting video is dealing with multiple cameras, and more specifically having to match the colour and contrast of footage recorded by each of those cameras to each of the other cameras.

Well, in this video from IWLTBAP, your life’s about to get a whole lot easier. In it, we see how to use Photoshop to correct a frame of a clip from one camera, to a frame of a clip from another, using Photoshop’s Match Color feature and then export out a 3DLUT using their free LUT Generator.

How to colour correct and grade your video and stills with 3D LUTs

3D LUTs, or Look-up Tables, are nothing new.  They’ve been common in the digital film industry for a good while, but it seems only recently that they’re starting to be embraced by individual filmmakers and photographers.

But what are 3D Luts?  Put simply, they’re a tonemap.  They take the hue, saturation and brightness (hence “3D”) values of each pixel in your image, and change those values into to something else.

Lightroom makes it really easy to apply looks with presets, but if you want your look inside Photoshop, you are looking at one of two options: Apply a look in lightroom after the final export or take the time and effort to apply the look in Photoshop. How To Create and Use Color Lookup Tables in Photoshop

The last few version of Photoshop (from PS 6, I think) have a powerful tool called LUT (or Look Up Tables). You can think of LUT as a way to apply a color scheme to a photo. Kinda like color grading or coloring. In fact, LUTs are often used in the video industry to create a certain look.

How To Do Cinematic Color Grading Like A Pro

Ever noticed how movies have a very distinct look that gives off a cinematic look. The process of taking the footage and giving it a specific look is called Grading. There are a few ways to achieve that look and the team at the Photoshop Training Channel provides one of the best color grading primers I’ve seen to date.

Now, Grading can be as complex as you want to take it, but if you want to get a general understanding of the process this video is a great 30 minutes crash course.
