Since debuting the Light L16 last October, it’s a product that many have been following with interest. Some see it as an interesting concept that’ll probably end up being vaporware, while others can’t wait to get their hands on it and see what it may hold for the future of photography.

The latest round of announcements from Light show that the L16 is well on its way, and will actually feature a couple of improvements over its initial spec sheet, including more storage and a wider focal range.

It’s at times like these when I do my best to combine the best of both worlds: natural light and flash.

To show off how best to bring together these two beasts photographer Adam Angelides has created a helpful tutorial.[Read More…]

Whether one is trying to photograph far away objects with a massive telephoto lens or using a microscope to document the tiny creatures that surround us, the rule is simple – if you can see it, you can photograph it.

It turns out, however, that objects don’t need to be visible to the lens in order for the camera to “see” them, as a research team from Scotland recently demonstrated.

A first of its kind camera is able to spot and track moving objects around corners in real time using short pulses of light from a laser beam.

Last week my good friend and awesome photographer Yvette Leur asked if I could edit one of her images she shot.  It was a lovely shot of a woman holding a lantern. The intention was that it was a nightly scene, with a lit lantern, the problem was that it was shot during a sunny day, in the shade, with no light in the lantern…hmmm

I accepted the challenge, and was given free reign of the edit.

Scientists Capture The First Ever Photo Of Light As A Particle And Wave

The idea of light consisting of both waves and particles was proposed by Albert Einstein over 100 years ago. While the idea has since been accepted, experiments have only been able to display one of these aspects at a time, but never both simultaneously.

That has changed now that scientists at EPFL (Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) have finally been able to capture the light’s wave-particle duality, in a scientifically exciting first-ever image.

why light trumps location in photography jp danko, blurmedia, toronto commercial photographer

One of my favorite locations for photography sessions is the beach in front of our family cottage.  Its a location that I use quite often for everything from family photos to commercial photography gigs.

The reason that it makes such a great photography location is because (besides being accessible) it has a little of everything: interesting texture, rugged wilderness, water and waves, ice and snow, sunshine, moody rain and fog, unobstructed star fields and everything in between.

But even with a great location, light trumps location in photography every time – and sometimes you have to break the rules!

This is a must see short film for photographers and cinematographers, alike. Aptly titled, Light & Shadow, the Zacuto produced film is a solid 14-minute long soundbite (20 minute total play time including the end credits). Light & Shadow explores various aspects and opinions of some of the industries greatest minds. The clip starts out by discussing the namesake of the film, light and shadow, and what those two things mean to a photographer. The collective wisdom of the photographers and filmmakers involved in the project continues to unfold as they begin sharing invaluable advice on how to make it in the business and make work you’re proud to have your name on.

“If you think for one moment that Hollywood gives a damn about what camera you used on a job, they don’t even know and I bet you couldn’t find three people who would even ask, so nobody should be worried about what camera they’re using.”
