75% of photographers said to lose all jobs due to COVID-19

It’s a tough time for photographers and filmmakers. For most of us, our work relies on being able to interact and engage with other people in the real world. But social distancing and lockdown measures in place around the globe have put a stop to that. And the consequences have hit a lot of us very hard.

Lensrentals held a survey of more than a thousand professional photographers and filmmakers about how COVID-19 has affected their business. According to their results, more than 96% of those who responded said that their income or work had been negatively impacted by COVID-19, with an average of 78% of bookings cancelled during April. And May doesn’t look like it’s going to be that much better.

Breakdown of the Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens shows internal design like nothing before

Seeing lenses taken apart and dismantled for the first time, or anything mechanically or electronically complex just fascinates me. I don’t know what it is about it, because it’s unlikely I’ll ever need to take one apart myself, and it serves no real educational or practical benefit. But I just find it interesting to see what makes this stuff tick.

One I’ve been particularly seeing inside is the new Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens, and as usual, Lens Rentals has not let us down. They’ve just posted a teardown of the Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens to their blog, and it shows that Nikon really seems to have stepped up their game when it comes to design and engineering.

These are Lensrentals’ most popular gear rentals for 2019

Each year, gear rental company Lensrentals likes to pool their data and see which was the most popular kit of the year. It’s quite an interesting list, showing some of the trends of the previous 12 months or so. They’ve just posted this year’s list, which covers from January 1st until December 12th, 2019, and there are one or two surprising products in there.

21 UV & protection filters are put to the test and the results are rather surprising

The “protective” filter debate rages on as always, but whether for them or against them, how do they all stack up? The folks over at Lens Rentals wanted to know. The man assigned to the task, Roger Cicala, didn’t really want to know, though. He’ll “get around to it some day”, he said. “Some day” came when he was told that it would involve lasers.

The test is to essentially see which filters will, theoretically, degrade your image the least. Which causes the least amount of light loss, reflection, refraction and distortion. So, 21 popular UV & protective filters were put to the test. It’s not entirely scientific, but it does involve lasers. The results are in and some of them are quite surprising.
