Leitz Auction edition Leica M6 limited to only 20 units worldwide

There are some cameras out there that are purely for decoration. They exist for the prestige of ownership, never likely to create even a single photo. This is such a camera. It’s a special Leitz Auction edition of the Leica M6 (buy here) to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Leitz Photographica Auction.

You’re only able to buy them in person from one very specific Leica shop in Vienna, Austria. It comes with the Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH lens (buy here), with both items sporting a glossy black finish. And if you want one, it’ll cost you €25,980.

Why I love my Leica M6

I prefer writing about work to writing about tools. When I started writing my thoughts on photography it was centred around gear, including reviews of various cameras and lenses, which worked at the time to build up my writing portfolio within photographic circles. Gear talk is quick and easy to produce, and never really changes because it’s all basically fundamentally the same; light gathering capability via lens and film/sensor, lens “effect”, speed and accuracy of operation, mechanics, electronics, ergonomics, usability, and how all of that works together to give a particular user a particular experience.

Leica has officially announced the Leica M6 reissue – their film camera launch in over 20 years

Leica has officially announced the Leica M6 reissue. It’s a relaunch of its popular M6 35mm film camera and the first new film camera that Leica has launched in over two decades. In fact, it’s been 20 years since Leica stopped making the original M6 back in 2002. It was initially launched in 1984 and Leica says they’ve handmade almost 175,000 Leica M6 cameras, serving photographers all over the world.

Leica says that the return of the legendary rangefinder “bring[s] back a cultural icon for a new generation to experience”. The new generation will be paying a lot more for those film and development costs than the last M6 generation did, of course, if you’ve got the money to splash out on a Leica, that’s probably not much of a concern.

Leica is reissuing the Leica M6 35mm film camera on October 20th with a €4,800 price tag

The Leica M6 film camera is one of the most collectable and sought-after film cameras out there on the used market. They’re not that expensive, either, regularly selling for around €3,000-3,500 or so. But if you want one brand new with a full warranty, then you’ll soon be able to do exactly that. Leica is apparently planning to reissue the Leica M6 rangefinder and it’s rumoured to be announced on October 20th.

Unlike most camera companies, Leica didn’t really stop making film cameras and you can still buy new ones today. The Leica MP, for example, a fully mechanical version of the Leica M7, can be yours for $5,695. But the M6 is one that’s thought of quite fondly amongst Leica shooters. If you want one, you’ll have to be quick, though. It’s rumoured that it’s going to be a limited edition run of only 500 cameras.

These “AudioPhotographs” combine a sound recorder with film photographs

Personal and experimental projects can be a lot of fun for both those who create them and those who view them. This particular project was created by Italian film photographer Mario Cipriano, and it’s definitely a little bit odd, but pretty cool.

He combines film photographs he shot with his Leica M6 with a sound recorder to capture the five seconds leading up to the shot being taken, and the five seconds following it. Each photo then has 10 seconds of audio to accompany it. It’s fascinating to watch played back in video form.
