Leica M10

FCC filing lets us take a peek inside the 40.9-megapixel Leica M10 Monochrom

Leica’s 3rd generation M10 Monochrom (model 6376) is an impressive little beast. I don’t know if it’s $8K+ impressive, but it’s pretty good. Announced just a couple of months ago, they’re not in the hands of many yet, but the folks at Leica Rumours discovered the FCC filing for the camera which shows off some of its internal electronics, including that full-frame 40-megapixel sensor.

Although the application was granted in January, Leica filed a confidentiality request with the FCC in order to keep the information and these images under wraps until the camera started shipping to prevent the competition from getting a sneak peek at what was coming.

When images first leaked of a white Leica, I thought it looked absolutely stunning. I knew it was going to be well outside of my budget, but I didn’t expect the price tag it’s been given. The White Edition Leica M10-P has now been officially announced. A US price was not released, but the UK price is £12,750, which works out to around $16,700. Of course, you don’t just get the camera for this price. No, that would be silly. You also get a silver chrome Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH lens.

Photos have leaked of a white edition Leica M10 and it looks just gorgeous

Cards on the table, I’ve never really seen the appeal of Leica vs the other brands. Or, to put it more accurately, I’ve never really got why they cost so much more than other cameras offering a wider range of features. I’ve never had any desire to even own a Leica, but this kinda makes me want to.

Nokishita has posted some images of a white (except for the little red Leica logo) Leica M10 to Twitter as an “unpublished limited model”. They’ve also posted photos of an M10-P “Ghost” edition they say will also be announced at some point soon.

This $11,000 lens is exactly why you don’t check camera gear when flying

It should be pretty common knowledge by now that you don’t check your delicate camera gear when flying. Ok, sometimes, you might no choice, especially if you fly Delta. But if the ability is there to carry it in your hand luggage, then do it. This was an expensive lesson to learn for one lady who recently brought her Leica M10 & 50mm f/0.95 Noctilux to Leica Store Manchester for repair.

The $10,995 lens has been smashed, and the $6,895 camera now won’t even turn on. Leica Store Manchester told PetaPixel, “She had only had the camera and lens for 2 weeks”.

An extreme weather review of the Leica M-P

With the recent release of the Leica’s new M10 I noticed an interesting commonality amongst the reviews. Almost all of them tested the camera in sunny, dry, or interior environments. Now I understand that Leica’s are expensive cameras and that reviewers and owners may not want to risk their equipment, but it strikes me that it might be worth knowing what kind of abuse these cameras can take given the high price they command.

Additionally, I’ve seen Leica’s treated with a sort of reverence that often influences the types of shots photographers are willing to risk taking. And it strikes me this reverence may be preventing some from fully taking advantage of what the camera can offer. Furthermore, if all you see coming out of Leica reviews are sunny shots in a neighborhood park, low light shots of a guitarist at a hip venue in Austin, or converted black and white street photography from an afternoon stroll around Florence, then you may come to think that’s what a Leica is for. For photography that is safe, secure, dry, or climate controlled.
