Laowa has released six of their popular lenses for the L mount system. The lenses include three wide angles (one zoom and two primes) along with three of their macro lenses. Laowa says that the new L-mount versions of the lenses are compatible with the Sigma fp, the Panasonic S1 series (including the S1R and S1H) as well as the Leica SL/CL cameras.

The lenses are all manual focus and the list includes some of Laowa’s favourites, including the 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 (the widest full-frame rectilinear lens that exists), the 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D, and their 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra-Macro, that we reviewed here.

The long-awaited Laowa 12mm T2.8 Zero Distortion cinema lens we got to take a peek at during NAB 2019 is finally here. It’s essentially the same internals as the Laowa 12mm f/2.8 but in a cinema housing. It offers the same 16 elements in 10 groups, the same field of view, 18cm minimum focus distance and manual focusing.

What makes it special to cinema, though, is that it offers a 270-degree focus throw for very precise control, particularly when using a follow focus wheel, a stepless aperture ring, it’s available in Canon EF, PL and Sony E mounts, and has a 100mm front filter thread with a step-up adapter for standard 114mm matte boxes.

Three of Venus Optics’ most popular lenses are now available for Nikon’s and Canon’s full-frame mirrorless cameras. The 12mm f/2.8, 25mm f/2.8, and 100mm f/2.8 already exist in a few other mounts, but they are now available to Nikon Z and Canon RF users as well.

Although Laowa does make a cinema mod version of their crazy 24mm f/14 Probe lens, they’re not really known for their cinema lenses. Because they haven’t really made any, until now. At NAB 2019, we saw a couple of pretty cool new lenses on the Laowa stand. 12mm T2.9 prime and a 25-100mm T2.9 zoom cinema lenses. So, we stopped to have a chat with them.

Ultrawide angle lenses are practical and fun. Almost every landscape, architectural, wedding or event photographer has one, as do many filmmakers. I have one, too. The problem with most of them, though, is barrel distortion. Usually, the wider the lens, the more of it you get.

You can fix Barrel distortion in Lightroom, but it’s easier if you don’t have to deal with it at all. The new Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D from Venus Optics uses 16 elements in 10 groups to eliminate barrel distortion almost entirely.
