Lake Baikal is the deepest and the oldest lake on Earth. Its icy surface is extremely photogenic, and people travel thousands of miles just so they could take photos at this magical place. But there’s another unique feature of this beautiful lake. It’s home to the Baikal seal or nerpa, one of the smallest pinnipeds in the world that could be found only in this lake.

Russian photographer Dmitry Kokh (previously) was on a mission to photograph this incredibly cute, but also incredibly shy creature. After a failed attempt two years ago, he gave it another shot and took some amazing photos of nerpas both above and below the icy lake surface. He kindly shared some photos with DIYP, and I’m sure you’ll love them as much as I did.

But people in Russia are lucky to live in a huge country with lots of things to visit. And during the pandemic, Lake Baikal in Siberia turned out to be particularly popular. People from all over Russia travel for hundreds, even thousands of miles only to take a selfie at this truly incredible location.

Baikal is impressive. It’s the deepest and the cleanest lake on Earth. When we were planning a trip, we didn’t even suspect it is so wonderful, majestic and fairy. We were raptured over its beauty so much, that we almost didn’t sleep all 3 days we were here.

Lake Baikal is about 600km in length. The thickness of it reaches 1,5-2 meters. This ice can tolerate the vehicle of about 15 tonnes, but sometimes we saw cars that had been fallen down. Ice has different patterns in different parts of the lake. It happens because water is freezing layer by layer. Especially it is very interesting to find a fish or a branch in the ice. The ice in Baikal is the most transparent in the world! And this is true. You can see everything till the bottom: fish, green stones, plants and bluish gulf. The water in the lake is so clear, that you can see various objects on the depth of 40 meters.

Lake Baikal, located in Southern Siberia, is the largest, deepest, oldest and among the clearest lakes in the world.

Judging by Alexey Trofimov’s photos it is also one of the most attractive.

Every winter when the lake freezes, the crystal clear water forms spectacular slabs of turquoise ice, making the UNESCO World Heritage Site all the more special.
