Nikon website suggests they’re finally giving up on 360 and action cameras

Nikon’s KeyMission line of cameras arrived with a pretty huge fanfare. Their entire Photokina 2016 press conference was based around them. But they’ve been a bit of a flop, really. Now, Nikon websites around the world are showing various models of KeyMission as being “Discontinued”.

It’s not surprising, really. While there have been a couple of KeyMission proponents and stories of extreme survivability, the KeyMission line had a rocky start, a not-too-great middle and now, apparently, an entirely underwhelming end.

The Nikon KeyMission cameras have had a bit of a tough time. First the KeyMission 360 suffered a long delayed launch. Then the line was split into three separate cameras, all of which felt a bit underwhelming. Finally they were unleashed on the general public, few of which seem particularly impressed by them.

One thing that’s not been mentioned much is the KeyMission’s durability. Chances are, this is because few have had one long enough to really put it to the test. But not so much for Russel Edwards at RSE Photography. He set one up in a tiger’s enclosure during feeding. One tiger, though, seemed a little confused about what was on the menu.

Nikon KeyMission 80 and KeyMission 170 camera specs leaked along with new photos

A little more information is coming out on the two new Nikon KeyMission 80 bodycam, and KeyMission 170 action cam. The most obvious one being that the KeyMission 80 appears to be coming in multiple colour options. I’m not quite sure what’s going on with the silver & leather look one, though. Perhaps it’s supposed to be “retro”. You know, to remind you of those old school bodycams from the 60s and 70s.

Still, both Nokishita and Digicame-info are reporting sets of specs, and both have released new images of the cameras. Interestingly, it appears that even though the KeyMission 170 is natively waterproof without an external housing, one is being made. If the image is accurate, the housing increases the depth to 40m (or 132ft).

Nikon’s delayed KeyMission 360VR camera to become three different cameras

It looks like Nikon are planning to not only enter the world of 360VR but take on the action cameras, too. It makes sense. It’s a huge market, and many action camera owners have 2 or 3 of them. The KeyMission delays are believed to be due to the earthquakes experienced in Japan earlier in the year.

It seems they haven’t wasted the time since then. Instead of just a single camera, though, it appears the KeyMission is now a small family of cameras. At least, that’s what Nokishita are reporting. Along with the 360, we’ll see a GoPro styled action camera with 170° field of view as well as a bodycam that has an 80° field of view.

Nikon was on fire yesterday with the release of the D5 and D500, but some of the thunder was no doubt stolen by the unexpected pre-announcement of the KeyMission 360.

The upcoming virtual-reality oriented action camera captures 360° video in 4K, above or up to 100 feet below the water surface, and seems to be in an excellent position to make an impact on the action cam and VR markets.

Talk is cheap though and good looks can be deceiving, so here are the first video samples captured with the KeyMission 360, showing off the camera’s impressive capabilities.
