Does this beautiful timelapse really show Europa and Io orbiting around Jupiter?

It’s funny how many things are being called out as fakes lately. It seems that most people think everything that’s posted to social media these days has been made by some kid in their bedroom with a copy of After Effects or Blender. The latest victim to the cries of “FAKE!” is a timelapse sequence created from a number of still photographs shot by Cassini back of the moons Io and Europa passing Jupiter’s surface in January 2001.

The video was created by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA-JPL) scientist Kevin M. Gill by combining hundreds of images shot by Cassini into a timelapse sequence. Despite the images being created 21 years ago, the timelapse video wasn’t created or posted to social media until 2018. More recently than that, it’s been posted to Reddit in r/Damnthatsinteresting with the caption “Timelapse of Europa and Io orbiting Jupiter captured by the Cassini probe” but commenters don’t believe it’s real. But are they right?

7,500 light-years away (or approximately 44,090,000,000,000,000 miles) from our tiny rock floating through space is the Soul Nebula (also known as Westerhout 5) in the constellation of Cassiopeia. And in one tiny section of that nebula is J025157.5+600606, a dense gaseous formation in which planets are born.

They’re called Free-floating Evaporating Gaseous Globules (FrEGGs – no, not these), which were only discovered a few years ago. This particular one occupies an extremely small part of the Soul Nebula and Hubble just shot a photo of it that looks just amazing.

This folding “ballistic” quadcopter drone launches out of a cannon

It’s called the SQUID (Streamlined Quick Unfolding Investigation Drone), and it’s a quadcopter drone, but it’s quite different from the usual kind of drones you might find at your local electronics store. Developed by Caltech and JPL, SQUID launches from a tube, unfolds in mid-air and then fires up its motors to stabilise itself and fly as normal.

It’s designed as a quick response drone, with minimal risk or energy required during takeoff to maximise the flight time. It also allows it to overcome some of the issues of launching regular drones. Issues like having to have a flat stable platform to take off from, and being able to get high enough, quickly enough, so that it’s out of the way of people and things on the ground.
