OWC stings large data storage problems into submission with the Jellyfish system

Large productions using several cameras shooting 8K means that there will be a lot of data to both store and somehow get from the cameras to the rest of the creative team working on post-production. Add to this infrastructure problems and teams often being situated around the world and you’ve got some quite complicated problems to solve.

Chirodectes maculatus is a jellyfish species that’s seen super-rarely. And I really mean super-rarely: it has only been documented twice so far. So, when this incredible creature was captured on camera, it was quite exciting. A diver managed to film it off the coast of Papua New Guinea, and the video is as spectacular as the jellyfish itself.

Drone captures footage of huge swarm of jellyfish off Israel coast

Is it safe to go back in the water? Well, not quite. At least, not if you’re near Israel’s Haifa Bay. Israel’s Nature and Parks Authority captured the incredible drone footage, which shows a small boat surrounded by what almost looks like white flower petals. The white blobs are jellyfish, however.

While it’s not uncommon to find large numbers of jellyfish in the Mediterranean during the high temperatures of the summer, this intensity and size of the swarm are less usual.

A new species of deep-sea crown jellyfish caught on camera

It keeps fascinating me how much we don’t know about the underwater world and how many remarkable species are still being discovered. One of them is a new species of jellyfish that MBARI (Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute) recently discovered.

Found in the depths of Monterey Bay, California, the team scientifically described the new species of crown jellyfish. But they also caught it on camera so all of us can enjoy seeing it (and perhaps be slightly terrified by it).

The video shows 29 different species of jellyfish, pulsating gently to music as they swim around in the water. It’s 10 minutes of total calmness and has a sort of meditative quality to it.

This underwater video of rare giant jellyfish is both magnificent and terrifying

Since only around 20% of the ocean has been discovered, there are still so many creatures we need to learn about. Some of them are beautiful, some are terrifying, and some are, strangely, both! The giant phantom jelly is in this last group, and I can’t get enough of looking at it. The rare jellyfish was recently caught on camera, and MBARI (Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute) has shared a video of this strange creature with the world.

Scientists film a rare “fireworks jellyfish” 4,000 feet deep

E/V Nautilus is an exploration vessel exploring unknown regions of the ocean. And just in time for the New Year celebration, the deep sea treated them with quite unusual fireworks. Their camera filmed a rare Halitrephes maasi jellyfish at 4,000 feet depth. Its vibrant colors glow when it’s lit, and the gorgeous creature threw an amazing show for the crew and the viewers.

Have you been to the beach in the last few years? If so was the only thing you could think about was “Please don’t let that jellyfish touch me! Please don’t let that jellyfish touch me! Please don’t let that jellyfish touch me!”. And was that because of those slimy tentacles that smear venomous pain-inducing mucus on you?

I had those thoughts too. But it turns out that if you actually take a strong microscope coupled with a 2,200 fps Phantom Miro camera you see that it is not the slime that hurts you, it is millions of small syringes that extend from the jellyfish and inject venom into your skin.
