The Aurora Borealis has been particularly spectacular this week, with sightings seen as far south as at the Stone Henge monument in the UK. Not to be left out, astronauts on board the International Space Station also captured some stunning images from a different perspective.
Astronaut Josh Cassada recently shared an image of Earth enjoying the Northern lights from 250 miles above. He described the light show as “absolutely unreal”.
Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata has recently been very busy onboard the International Space Station. Not only has he just done his first space walk, but he’s been using his downtime to head to the cupola viewing dome with his camera. And his images are just stunning.
Take this one of Florida’s Key West. It could almost be an abstract painting. And then there’s the aerial view of the aptly named ‘Eye of the Sahara’.
American astronauts Frank Rubio and Josh Cassada successfully completed NASA’s first spacewalk since March. The spacewalk lasted a whopping 7 hours and 11 minutes and served to complete several objectives on the outside of the International Space Station.
NASA live streamed the entire space walk. It’s not just an incredible thing to watch, but the astronaut’s helmet cams managed to shoot some amazing footage of our own planet Earth in the process.
We’ve seen some splendid photos taken from the International Space Station. They’re out of this world (quite literally) regardless of the gear, so just imagine what they would be like if astronomers used fancy ultra-high-resolution cameras.
Well, you don’t need to imagine. The recent NG-18 mission sent state-of-the-art immersive camera gear to the ISS. It’s the highest-resolution camera system ever launched to the space station and will bring us an immersive experience at the MSG Sphere venues here on Earth.
On 5 October, SpaceX launched the Crew-5 astronaut mission for NASA fromnedy Space Center in Florida. This is the fifth crew rotation mission with astronauts using the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft on a Falcon 9 rocket, and NASA shared some photos and the video of the launch.
It must be a strange feeling being up in space and witnessing potentially catastrophic events back down on planet earth. The sensations of both awe and impotence simultaneously could be enough to wreak havoc on your mental health.
So spare a thought for the astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) this week who have released stunning footage of Hurricane Ian seen from above.
Other than being superhumans, the ISS astronauts are also darn good at photography. They not only have the most amazing view, but they also have the skill required to turn that view into epic photos.

European Space Agency (EAS) Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti has shared two incredible Timelapse videos of both the aurora borealis and moonrise from the International Space Station (ISS). The videos show the neon green lights shimmering across the globe and were taken from different vantage points in the ISS.
Also known as the Northern lights, the auroras have been particularly vivid this year due to increased solar flares and activity on the sun’s surface.
Thanks to recent intense solar storms, aurora borealis have been traveling further than it normally does. It’s been seen as far as New York and even some parts of the UK. Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti has shared an image on board the International Space Station (ISS) where she has recreated a scene from the hit Hollywood movie Gravity. Cristoforetti is part of the European Space Agency and was able to take a moment out of her schedule for a little fun.
Fortunately, the scene in question wasn’t the part where George Clooney floats off into oblivion, but rather a scene where Sandra Bullock is floating through the space station wearing a grey vest and black shorts.
