Insta360 speeds up ONE R and ONE X2 workflow with faster transfers and better in-camera stabilisation

Insta360 has announced a big update to the Insta360 ONE R and Insta360 ONE X2 cameras with new firmware that implements their new Quick FlowState in-camera stabilisation, replacing the “Basic” stabilisation and rivalling the FlowState feature in their apps. The announcement also brings new features to the Insta360 mobile app and a new Quick Reader that provides easy backup and faster transfers between your camera and your smartphone.

It’s the fourth big update for Insta360 this year adding new features to both their cameras and software, which Insta360 says shows its commitment to supporting and “improving [their] cameras long after you unbox it for the first time”. And the updates certainly seem to breathe a little new life into both the ONE R and ONE X2.

Amongst the tiny form factor cameras, the Insta360 ONE R is pretty unique. It’s the first modular action camera that lets you easily swap out different lens modules and even a 360° module. But what makes them tick? That’s what one of our favourite YouTubers, Strange Parts wanted to find out when he decided to dismantle his.

We’ve seen action cameras torn apart before, and they’re usually pretty basic with everything just on a single board. But given the modular nature of the Insta360 ONE R, we know this isn’t going to be your average internal action camera design. And as the video shows, it certainly isn’t.

This guy built a DIY cablecam using a cheap radio controlled car

Cablecams are a lot of fun, but they’re not inexpensive, even if you need just something small for your action camera. There are commercial solutions out there, like the Wiral Lite, but they’re pretty expensive for what they are. Perhaps even more so than the camera you’re mounting to it.

When Kasper at MAKESOME was asked by his friend Mick if he could help design and build one for his Insta360 ONE R, though, he jumped at the chance, and did take some inspiration from the Wiral Lite, but based the electronics off a cheap radio controlled car, to brilliant effect.

360° cameras have come far in the last couple of years. I remember trying out the first version of the Ricoh Theta and thinking that it was a cool idea, but the quality and feature set just wasn’t there. When the YI 360 VR was released, offering 5.7K resolution, I felt they were finally starting to hit that point. But the tech that goes into 360° cameras has come much further since then.

Insta360 teams up with Leica for the ONE R – A modular action camera with a 5.3K 1″ sensor

Action cameras seem to come out with alarming regularity, and more players are jumping into the field every year. But there’s been very little real innovation in action cameras beyond improving on what already exists. Insta360, though has taken a very different approach with their entry into the world of action cameras.

Announced today, the Insta360 ONE R sees Insta360 team up with Leica to develop a modular action camera that offers three different ways to shoot. A dual-lens “Super 5.7K” 360° module, a 4K wide-angle module, and a 1″ 5.3K wide-angle module developed in partnership with Leica. And there’s even an Aerial Edition which lets you mount it to a drone.
