The problem with “Fix it in post” and “Get it right in the camera”

It’s time we put some updated sensibilities’ behind the statements “fix it in post” and “getting it right in the camera”.

A few people mentioned these phrases to me recently and honestly, I was surprised to hear how they interpreted the meaning behind them.  I was even more surprised and disappointed when I posted the topic on social media today and quite a few people weighed in with very strong opinions and RULES for how things should be done.

I know, I know — I shouldn’t be surprised by people arguing their opinions on social media.

The Thing is arguably one of sci-fi’s finest masterpieces, of that there is no doubt. Released in 1982, its creators didn’t have access to even the most modest of modern CG tools that can run on just about everybody’s desktop or laptop computer today. They had to do things practically. For real. In-camera.

Amongst those things shot practically is the initial opening title sequence. After initially seeing a ship hurtling towards the earth, the words “THE THING” are burned into the screen. Even though Flickr has gone through so many changes, I still haven’t left it. And from time to time, this platform helps me to discover photos that steal all my attention. So, when I opened the front page a few days ago, I saw a photo named Downside Up and it made my jaw drop. It was taken by Tim Gamble, a photographer and a UK Brand Ambassador for Light Painting Brushes.

After staring at this impressive photo for a while, and opening it again the following morning, I knew I needed to know more. So, I got in touch with Tim. He kindly shared the photo with DIYP and told us how it was taken: entirely in-camera, at a single exposure!

There are plenty of ways to edit your videos and enhance them in post. But, there are also many tricks that help you do it in-camera. In this video, Jakob Owens of The Buff Nerds shares five simple ways that will let you add interesting effects to your videos as you film them.

Jakob uses these techniques for music videos, but you’ll find them handy for other types of video work as well. I personally think they’d look great in B-roll, and you can even use them in photos.

As a creative, you can think of plenty interesting ways to promote your work, and Toronto-based photographer and visual artist Justin Poulsen has gone a pretty wacky route. In this short video, he recreated everyone’s favorite “poop emoji” in fifty different ways. He created all the scenes in camera and made a fun and unusual video.
