iPhone 13 Pro teardown shows a fatter camera module, bigger battery and more

The iPhone 13 lineup is the latest from the Apple camp and the iPhone 13 Pro has seen a few nice updates over its 12th generation predecessor. It’s got the new A15 Bionic processor, adaptive refresh up to 120Hz, up to a third longer battery life and a new camera module – sort of. It’s similar to the old one, but chunkier.

As per usual, the folks at iFixit have taken an iPhone 13 Pro apart and published their disassembly process along with some of their tests and findings. And despite the improvements, it’s not all good news. Right to repair is definitely not at the forefront with this device.

Apple kills off 3rd party iPhone 12 camera repairs thanks to proprietary Apple tool requirement

If you’re one of those who’s jumped on the new iPhone 12 smartphones, be ready to take very good care of it because if you kill the camera, there’s no inexpensive repair option. It will have to go back to either Apple or one of the few (expensive) authorised repair centres, iFixit has discovered in some more extensive testing of the new iPhones.

A leaked internal Apple training guide suggests that this is intentional on Apple’s part, and also indicates that it’s true of all four models of the new 12 series iPhones, as they have to be tested through Apple’s proprietary software – although iFixit has only seen issues with the iPhone 12 so far. Oh, yeah, and screens can’t be user replaced without errors, either.

iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro camera modules revealed in this iFixit teardown

No matter what brand of phone you choose to use yourself, the biggest spectacle in the smartphone world each year is undoubtedly the new iPhone releases. This year, that meant the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro (well, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max, but that’s not available yet). And, following on from that announcement is the obligatory teardown from iFixit.

In an hour and a half live stream, Taylor Dixon, iFixit’s Teardown Engineer, took apart both the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro to see how easy it is to dismantle and to take a look at the components inside – including the camera modules (the camera talk is around the 44-minute mark).

The DJI Mavic Air 2 is actually super easy to fix

The folks at iFixit have been working hard during the lockdown, including building a massive repository of repair information for ventilators and other devices to help those who need to repair life-saving equipment. But they’re also managing to keep up with their regular YouTube duties, too, still regularly posting teardowns and instructional videos to repair your personal devices.

Most recently, their latest video is the new DJI Mavic Air 2 drone; DJI’s follow-up to 2018’s popular Mavic Air. iFixit’s video takes the Mavic Air 2 apart to show how all of the major components fit together, and how easily they dismantle to provide access to pretty much every component contained within.

Huawei P20 Pro teardown shows that all three cameras have optical image stabilisation

The Huawei P20 Pro, the world’s first smartphone with three rear cameras, has been torn apart by the folks at iFixit to reveal a nice surprise. Above and beyond the published specs, it seems that all three of the phone’s rear cameras feature optical image stabilisation. According to iFixit’s report, only the 8MP telephoto camera in the P20 Pro is supposed to have hardware optical image stabilisation. But they’re not quite convinced.
