Fujifilm breaks backup storage records with a tape that can hold 580 Terabytes

Fujifilm has shattered backup storage records with a new magnetic tape backup solution that offers around 50x the capacity of current commercially available LTO-8 tapes – which hold around 12TB of uncompressed data. Fuji’s new format stands at a whopping 580TB of data storage, thanks to the development of a new magnetic particle called Strontium Ferrite (SrFe).

The new system was developed in conjunction with IBM Research and provides a single tape with enough space to store the equivalent of 120,000 DVDs. They say that the newly developed magnetic material allows for finer particles and denser storage while still offering a high level of performance.

IBM’s Watson gives us the world’s first AI created movie trailer and it’s pretty creepy

I’m going to get it out of the way right at the start. Having watched the trailer, I want to go and see this movie. This trailer tells us absolutely nothing about what the movie’s about, but every cut pulls me in more. Until the guy starts talking at the end of the trailer, I’ve no idea that the movie is “an AI horror thriller”. But these are the kind of trailers I grew up with.

The trailer, for new movie Morgan, was created by artificial intelligence. Specifically, IBM’s Watson. Does it matter that the movie only scored 42% on Rotten Tomatoes? No, of course it doesn’t. A trailer’s job isn’t to tell us how good or bad a film is. A trailer’s job is to make us want to go and see the film no matter how good or bad it may ultimately be. For me, Morgan’s trailer does exactly that.

NSA Uses Hidden Software In Hard Drives for International Cyber-Espionage

Earlier today it was revealed by Kaspersky, a leading software security group, that the NSA has been using leading brand hard drives to spy on targets worldwide. In fact, they have been doing so since 2001.

While you most likely use a hard drive manufactured by one of the companies involved, chances are that you haven’t been a victim. Not that you’ve got any way of knowing…

Infected computers were found in over 30 countries, including Iran, Russia, Pakistan and China.
