NASA revealed the James Webb Space Telescope’s first photos yesterday, and the world is still under a great impression. The telescope was built on Hubble’s legacy and some objects shown in the first images had already been captured by Hubble. So, naturally, we want to compare them and see exactly how the two telescopes differ in power.

Spoiler alert: they differ a lot. We have all been amazed by Hubble’s images for over thirty years now, but Webb is Hubble on steroids in terms of image quality. So, let’s see how the photos from these two powerful telescopes compare.

Over its 32-years-long career, the Hubble Space Telescope has captured all sorts of stunning events in our universe. One of them is a merger of two galaxies, and NASA recently shared a photo Hubble took of this incredible event.

Around 520 million light-years from Earth, in the constellation Orion, the two galaxies were brought together, forming a multi-armed galaxy merger. And in this stunning photo that NASA and ESA shared, you can see what it looks like.

Astronomers estimate that there are 100 million lonely black holes drifting through our galaxy. Despite such a huge number, they’re virtually invisible and extremely difficult to detect.

But now, for the first time in history, NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has managed to help scientists to identify one of these lonely wanderers. They used Hubble’s data to identify and even measure the mass of the black hole wandering through our galaxy.

NASA has released a Hubble image that’s jaw-dropping and frightening at the same time. It shows our Galaxy, the Milky Way, heading towards a collision with its neighboring Andromeda galaxy. Of course, it’s not going to happen any time soon, but the photo will still make you look in awe and admire the almighty power of our universe.

This week the Hubble telescope has captured a galaxy that NASA has described as “an oddity“. The catchily named GAMA 526784 is an ultra-diffuse galaxy which according to NASA “appears as a tenuous patch of light”, or ‘a bit fluffy’ in layman’s terms.

The ‘fluffy’ galaxy is part of the Hydra constellation of stars and is around 4 billion light-years away from Earth. NASA writes that this type of galaxy has “a number of peculiarities”.

The Hubble telescope has been showing us breathtaking images of space since its launch in 1990. So far it has made 1.4 million observations. Physicist Dr Casey Handmer took 936,000 of these observations and created an insanely detailed composite image of all of them.

After piecing the composite together (using calculations and coding rather than Photoshop!) Dr Handmer realised that around 0.8 per cent of the sky was on show.

It’s been 32 years since NASA launched Hubble Space Telescope into orbit. And just like every year, the anniversary is marked by a photo that Hubble captured on duty.

To celebrate Hubble’s 32nd birthday, NASA has shared yet another remarkable image. It shows an unusual close-knit collection of five galaxies, called The Hickson Compact Group 40.

NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has just broken yet another record. After the most distant star ever seen, it’s now spotted and captured the largest icy comment astronomers have ever seen. And it truly is massive!

The estimated diameter is approximately 80 miles across. For reference, that’s larger than the state of Rhode Island, and around 26 times larger than the Comet Neowise. As for its nucleus, it’s about 50 times larger than found at the heart of most known comets. Its mass is also enormous: NASA estimates that it weighs 500 trillion tons, which a hundred thousand times greater than the mass of a typical comet found much closer to the Sun.

NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has provided us with many iconic and groundbreaking photos for over 30 years of its time in orbit. And now, the telescope has broken another record. Hubble has snapped the furthest star we have ever seen to date. According to Nasa, it existed “only” one billion years after the big bang.

This discovery is groundbreaking for several reasons. It’s not only the furthest star Hubble has snapped s far. it’s also the smallest object it has ever seen at such a great distance.

NASA’s Hubble telescope has reached the 20th anniversary this month of the installation of its Advanced Camera for Surveys system (ACS). Astronauts installed the ACS during a Hubble servicing mission in March 2002, and the camera has been producing detailed images of deep space ever since.

The ACS has a wide field of view, sharp image quality, and high sensitivity and has delivered some of the most iconic images seen.
