Use your non photography interests to step out of your comfort zone

We all get that feeling sometimes when we look at our work and we feel we have been creating the same kind of images for too long without experimenting. It is good to create a portfolio of work which showcases your skill in one style, but we as artists still need to experiment to grow and to keep ourselves from going insane.

A good way of being inspired to experiment is to look through your body of work, find an area you haven’t really dabbled in then put on your experimenting hat and get stuck in.

This photographer creates miniature horror scenes with Lego

Lego characters make the most amazing subjects, they really do. It’s just like photographing people, but on a smaller scale. They’re more reliable, too. They show up, on time, do whatever you want them to, and don’t try to defame you all over the media. So, it’s no wonder they’re such a popular subject.

They’re a particular favourite for photographer Juhamatti Vahdersalo. Although, he’s gonna quite dark with his Lego characters. But why not? Nobody said the world in which toys live has to be all unicorns and rainbows. And these certainly aren’t.

Photographer builds up over 3 million followers with his horror photography

If you use Facebook, you may have come across a 360 image featuring a psych slasher murdering his victims shared by one of your friends. If you have, then there is a high possibility that you have already seen the work of Adam Martyn Ewings. Through the creation of these 360 images and a bucketload of creativity, Adam has amassed over 3 million followers on his Facebook page. I contacted Adam to get some insight into the dark depths of his mind.

If you take a left turn from the comfort of your usual photography sites and safe viewing places you might notice there is at them moment a wealth of darker delights for you to find. Images that shock, awe and downright creep you out. Horror photography seems to be having a little boost right now, with many cool artists forwarding the genre. One of these artists is Thomas G Anderson the winner of this years I-horror horror photographer of the year award. I had the pleasure of interviewing Thomas for DIY.

Alex Baker is a portrait and lifestyle driven photographer based in Valencia, Spain. She works on a range of projects from commercial to fine art and has had work featured in publications such as The Daily Mail, Conde Nast Traveller and El Mundo, and has exhibited work across Europe

Dave Williams is an accomplished travel photographer, writer, and best-selling author from the UK. He is also a photography educator and published Aurora expert. Dave has traveled extensively in recent years, capturing stunning images from around the world in a modified van. His work has been featured in various publications and he has worked with notable brands such as Skoda, EE, Boeing, Huawei, Microsoft, BMW, Conde Nast, Electronic Arts, Discovery, BBC, The Guardian, ESPN, NBC, and many others.

John Aldred is a photographer with over 20 years of experience in the portrait and commercial worlds. He is based in Scotland and has been an early adopter - and occasional beta tester - of almost every digital imaging technology in that time. As well as his creative visual work, John uses 3D printing, electronics and programming to create his own photography and filmmaking tools and consults for a number of brands across the industry.

Dunja Djudjic is a multi-talented artist based in Novi Sad, Serbia. With 15 years of experience as a photographer, she specializes in capturing the beauty of nature, travel, and fine art. In addition to her photography, Dunja also expresses her creativity through writing, embroidery, and jewelry making.
