Lightroom now natively supports massive PSB files

Adobe just made it dramatically easier to use Lightroom to manage large files created with exposure blending, Smart Objects, images enlarged for print, and anything that creates a file larger than the 4GB limit for TIF files.

Until now, if you wanted to use PSB files you’ve had to use workarounds to be able to view large documents in Lighroom (such as the “convert layers to linked PSB” utility built into Lumenzia) or something like Adobe Bridge to view PSB files. That’s no longer the case, as Lightroom v9.2 now has native support for the PSB file format.

A camera’s built in meter often does a great job of making a “correct” exposure, but it’s not always what the photographer wants to capture. Despite how “smart” they’ve become, camera meters will still often get it wrong. They’ll blow out the sky to maintain the ground, or you’ll get a well exposed sky with your subject crushed to a black silhouette.

This three part video series from photographer Greg Benz walks us through the process from start to finish. It begins before we’ve taken the shot through to reviewing the raw file on the computer. We’re not talking about the “technically correct” exposure here. We’re talking about the right exposure. The exposure that, all things weighed up, gives you exactly the shot that you want.

It has been my experience that most people are cordial when they see you trying to capture a photo.  They may pause until you are done or ask if you are taking a shot at the moment or apologize if they feel they accidentally walked into frame.  Then again, I live in a place where we wave at strangers while driving just to be polite, so my sampling may be skewed.

But, what happens when you’re taking photos on a tripod outside a nuclear facility and the security personnel keep getting in the way of your pristine shot?  (Buggers!)  Well, you remove them.  (EDITOR’S NOTE:  “Remove” is not to be confused with “eliminate.”  We are forbidden to advocate such actions.)  In Photoshop.  Greg Benz show us the rather straight-forward process which involves shooting multiple frames of your subject (whilst keeping the camera still, i.e. mounted to a tripod) as people are moving about within the frame.
