Nikon to dump GPS in favour of GNSS according to new camera registration

First spotted back in early March after registration in Russia, and then in Indonesia in July, the unreleased Nikon camera, “N2014” (which Nikon Rumors believes may be the upcoming Nikon Z9 flagship) now has some interesting new news. It looks like it’ll ditch the more traditional GPS system in favour of GNSS according to the latest registration.

The news comes via Nokishita and says that as well as featuring the standard WiFi and Bluetooth, the N2014 camera will also utilise the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), which should offer more accurate positioning data. If true, this would mark the first consumer camera to include GNSS support.

Cheap $20 GPS jamming devices can make your drone fall out of the sky but solutions are out there

For years, companies have been working on finding ways to safely (and sometimes not) take out drones doing things they shouldn’t be doing – whether it’s flying too close to crowds or delivering contraband to prisons. The keyword there is “safely”. There are plenty of ways to take down drones these days, but most aren’t safe and they can cause havoc to legitimate drone pilots flying completely legally.

But perhaps the most potentially dangerous are the cheap GPS jammers available online from sites such as Banggood  – which are illegal in much of the world. These devices, which can cost as little as $20, interfere with the GPS signals reaching your drone so it has no idea where it is, causing it to potentially just fall out of the sky. But solutions are out there.

GoPro suffers more bad Karma as widespread GPS issue grounds drones

I think GoPro just wants to ever forget they even entered the drone market at this point. Most other people have, but occasionally something pops up that reminds us all how badly they failed at it. Now, more bad news as GPS issues ground the Karma while GoPro investigates.

This app uses Google’s location history to geotag your photos.

We hear a lot these days about privacy, especially when it comes to our smartphones and social media. There’s the constant paranoia of being “spied” on by these big companies, and the amount of data they’re collecting on us.

Well, what if we could use some of that data to our own advantage? That’s what software developer Chuck LePlant has done. His new Python script adds GPS tags to your photos based on your Google location history.

This new image mapping website could be an invaluable tool for location and landscape photographers

Panoramio was an invaluable location scouting tool for me. I could zoom into an area I wanted to scout, and all these little blips would appear on the map. Each showing me the location from a different view. If I happened to notice a particular cluster in a given area, I could zoom in tighter, and quickly see a bunch of different angles. Quickly determine if it was a tourist spot, or somewhere a little more out of the way.

Now that it’s been merged into Google Maps, that functionality no longer really exists. Sure, it has a strip of images along the bottom of the map and mousing over them shows you where they were shot, but it doesn’t really tell the whole story any more. Photographer Mike Wong must’ve felt this too. He is the creator of a new photo mapping website which shows where all of the images on 500px were created around the globe. At least, the ones with GPS information.

DIY Lighting – Trading Your GPS For a Flash

When strolling at my local autostore I stumbled across this very interesting gadget. (Well, not exactly this interesting gadget, but a close sibling).

It is a windshield mount for a GPS device. The natural thing for me, being the why-don’t-you-stop-and-ask-for-directions-said-the-wife kinda guy that I am, and the natural and logical thing for me is to buy a GPS. However, those babies cost millions.

I had no alternative but to go to my other hobby – photography and see how I can use this mount for my photography studio.[Read More…]
