Backing up is always a hotly debated topic. Even just whether to back up or not is often a cause of conflict in a lot of social media photography groups. And even if you have chosen to backup your work, you’ll see three million responses describing exactly how you should back everything up in order to ensure you never lose anything – and they’ll all be different. Ultimately, everybody has the workflow that works best for them.

But what will work best for you? If you’re just thinking about backing up your photos and video, or even if you do already but you want to learn more about other backup technologies, this video from Gordon Laing will set you off on the right foot. In it, he talks about a whole bunch of different backup options along with the pros and potential cons of each.

Why don’t all cameras have fully articulating flippy out LCDs?

This is an interesting little rant from James Popsys on camera LCDs. Essentially, his question is why don’t all cameras have a fully articulating flippy out LCD? It’s a question I’ve often wondered myself in the past. The lack of one has definitely put me off buying certain cameras, too. But are they really essential in the grand scheme of things?

What makes James’ rant interesting, though, is not necessarily the rant itself, but the response to it. On the surface, his reasoning seems quite logical and his justifications for it existing in cameras across the board are generally the reasons why I prefer flippy out LCDs, too. But they’re not always ideal.

The Canon EOS R3 is the hot topic in the Canon camp right now. Development of the new camera was announced in April and Canon’s already teasing us with more information about it with features like oversampled 4K video and new AI-powered vehicle tracking AF for motorsports shooters.

Most of us have only seen photos so far, but Gordon Laing managed to not-quite-get-his-hands-on the real thing. In an in-person briefing by Canon about the new camera, he got to at least see one (well, a pre-production model) up close – even if they wouldn’t let him turn it on and use it, or even touch it.

Reviewing Sony’s first ever digital camera 25 years after its release

Even though they didn’t really start to take off as a camera manufacturer until after they bought Minolta in 2006, Sony’s been in the digital camera game for quite a while. They were one of the first companies to release one to general consumers and if memory recalls, they actually weren’t too bad for their time. This one even has a selfie mode!

Of course, the 25-year-old Sony DSC-F1 can’t keep up with their new A1 flagship, as evidenced in this retro-review by Gordon Laing. He puts the camera through its paces to see how it performs and points out some of the issues with using proprietary tech and connections in hardware, making things somewhat inaccessible for future generations.

With all the talk of the Canon EOS R5’s overheating and shortcomings for filmmakers lately, it can be difficult to remember that this camera was primarily designed for shooting stills. And stills is what still primarily interests a lot of would-be Canon EOS R5 owners. In fact, there are many photographers out there who are only interested in stills and don’t care about video one bot.

So, how does the EOS R5 hold up as a photography camera? You know, it’s primary purpose? Well, Gordon Laign at Camera Labs has posted an extremely in-depth review of the EOS R5, and it should answer just about every question you might have about the camera and how well it works for photography.
