GoPro fights bad karma with Hero5 video telemetry overlay features

GoPro haven’t been having a great time of things lately. Share prices are down, sales are down, the Hero4 Black was practically usurped by a competitor at half the cost. The Karma’s been recalled, and the Hero5 Black wasn’t as impressive or as revolutionary as customers might’ve hoped for. But now, GoPro have surprised us with something that’s pretty cool.

Users were initially underwhelmed by the GoPro’s long awaited built in GPS features in the Hero5. Pretty much all it did was tag where our photos and videos were shot. Well, every cellphone can do that. All that changes, today, though. GoPro are taking every single bit of data logged by the camera to let your produce a real-time on-screen video overlay to represent different aspects of your journey.

YI CEO: Splitting off from XIAOMI, We are not afraid of crappy counterfeits, China will get bigger

We are keeping a close eye on YI. initially dubbed as the GoPro killer, YI has been growing. They have a gimbal out, a drone in the planning and a mirrorless camera. I thought it would be very interesting to speak with YI CEO, Mr. Sean Da, about the past, present and future of YI.

It is clear that YI is very technology focused. When we talked with, Mr. Sean Da, he was not telling a lifestyle story about mountain climbing, surfing or parachuting. He was simply saying, we have the best camera in the market. This is a really interesting approach to the market, but I think it is also one of the companies weak spots. A lot of the market is not being sold on tech, it is being sold on stories and I think that YI will have to pivot that was if they want to conquer the market.

Watch a GoPro Hero 5 taken apart piece by piece (then put together again)

When you were a kid, you may have toyed around with taking things apart. Then, putting them back together again. For me, more often than not, the put-back-together part ended with some spare parts. The lack of which did not seem to impact the assembled piece though.

Watch the GoPro Hero 5 undergoing the same procedure.  JerryRigEverything takes a brand new GoPro Hero 5 apart. Usually, those videos are made so you can learn how to replace damaged parts, but sadly, GoPro does not sell spare parts for the Hero5. You’d need another dead Hero 5 for savaging the parts. Who knows, maybe GoPro will end up selling parts, or you can Frankenstein 2 dead GoPros into a live one.

GoPro Hero5 Black vs Hero5 Session vs YI 4K

A lot has been said about the new GoPro Hero5 Black and Hero5 Session cameras since their recent release. The new touchscreen LCD has received a lot of praise, as has the fact that you can finally use it underwater without an external housing. But the resolutions and frame rates haven’t changed since the Hero4 Black. So how does it compare?

We posted our own GoPro Hero4 Black vs YI 4K comparison video not too long ago, and the YI 4K pretty much smoked it in almost every aspect. Have GoPro done enough with the Hero5 to make up ground? What about the Hero5 Session? In this review video from Ben Schmanke, we get to find out.

The DJI Mavic Pro footage looks like a cheap HD action camera compared to the Phantom 4

For some, the image quality is going to take a distant second to ease of use and convenience. There’s no doubt that the new DJI Mavic Pro is super convenience. Fitting into a small bag, or a large pocket, it’s easy to take wherever you go. But, is that convenience going to be enough? Is it going to make Phantom 4 owners sell up and replace it with a drone that costs almost as much and doesn’t offer the same quality?

Well, for Casey Neistat, the answer is a definite yes. To satisfy some of the haters from his previous video showing off Mavic footage at a mere 1080p, Casey shot today’s video in 4K. In it, he puts the DJI Mavic Pro head to head with the DJI Phantom 4. He also includes the GoPro Karma. Ok, well, he sort of includes the Karma. He doesn’t have a Karma yet, but he does have a GoPro Hero 5 Session, which is the camera the Karma uses.

Hands on with the GoPro Hero5 Black

We were (semi) excited about the GoPro hero5 Black announcement. And while the footage wuality is yet to be seen, we were still left with some questions about how the camera actually feels and operates.

Questions like how does the camera mount to a stick (or any other accessory for that matter)?  How does it feel in your hands? Is the LCD any good?

Luckily we met the gopro team on the floor and they just happened to have a gopro hero5 black with them. We asked to play with it for a few minutes and got some info to share.

GoPro’s HERO5 has a touch screen, built in waterproofing and voice control

GoPro just announced their new line of cameras (along with the Karma drone) and frankly I am not that excited. The new line from GoPro is called Hero5 (no big surprises there) and it features only two cameras: a more advanced GoPro Hero5 Black and a smaller GoPro Hero5 session. That, I think, is a good sign that GoPro are getting some of their focus back and not spreading too thin on their camera range.

The question of whether these cameras (and drone, and gimbal) are enough to catch up with competition is a different one.

This could be the next Gopro 5 (roundup)

The Gopro 4 was announced about a year ago at september 2014. With photokina fast approaching and set to end of september this year, I would not be surprised if we will get another announcement from Gopro in a month or so.

But what will this announcement have? I mean, what will the Gopro 5 look like? What features will be in it and most importantly, will it be enough to pull GoPro out of the depths it is curently in. And by depths I mean both competition and plunging stock price.
