Godox AD600Pro

How to fix the biggest problem with the Godox AD400/AD600 Pro strobes

Photography equipment has come a long way in recent years; staggering megapixel counts, blisteringly fast AF systems, and low-light performance that was unheard of not long ago. But in my opinion, one of the most useful and underrated advancements has been in off-camera lighting, notably portable, battery-powered strobes.

Gone are the days where I hauled my 30kg case that housed my 3 Bowens Gemini lights and the rats nest of 10 metre power cables and PC Sync cords to every assignment, I no longer need to search high and low for power outlets and risk clients tripping over cables, nor do I need to spend every pound earned on a physiotherapist to repair my back from the labour of it all.

TurtleRig bulb extensions say they provide up to a whole stop of extra light with Godox strobes

One of the big problems with the Godox AD600 and AD600 TTL was the position of the bulb relative to the modifiers. It just sat a little too far back into the head, and many people felt they weren’t getting the power they should. Godox largely solved this problem with the AD600Pro and AD400Pro, but there are still many AD600 owners out there.

TurtleRig has now announced its newest solution to this problem, with their version 3 bulb extensions. Essentially, they’re shims which sit between the strobe head and the bulb, offering extension pins to bring the bulb out further from the modifier. They’re available for the original AD600 models as well as several other Godox strobes.

New firmware updates for various pieces of Godox kit show a couple of very nice additions. The big news for most Godox shooters is that 1/10th stop support has now come to the XPro triggers & AD600 Pro strobe. The big news for Pentax shooters is that Pentax X flash system support has now been added to the AD600M, AD600 TTL and AD600 Pro strobes.

A few days ago, some photos leaked out of a new strobe claiming to be the Godox AD400Pro. It seems the photos were accurate, as Godox announced the strobe earlier through their Facebook page. Following on from the AD600Pro design, the AD400Pro is about as we expected it to be, but now the details are official.

First look at the Godox AD600Pro / Pixapro Citi600Pro / Flashpoint Xplor600 Pro

The names under which Godox gear is rebranded around the world can get a little confusing at times. Here in the UK, this is the Pixapro CITI600 Pro. In the USA it’s the Flashpoint Xplor600 Pro and the Godox AD600Pro depending on where you buy it. In various other countries, it’s sold under other names, too. From here, I’ll just call it the “600Pro”. But wherever you buy it, no matter what it’s called, this is an outstanding portable strobe. I’ve had one myself for a few weeks now (review coming soon), and it never fails to impress me with its speed and power.

The AD600 Pro vs. The Profoto B1X vs. The Broncolor Siros 800L

In 2016 I made a video comparing the Profoto B1 and Godox AD600. Since then both models have had an updated release and Broncolor has also released the Siros 800 and 400. I decided to put all three models head to head to help people decide which is the best option. I compare these 3 models because they are very high powered lights that feature an attached battery, remote power control, and all of the features that photographers look for in a strobe designed for location-based work.

The Godox AD600Pro is now official – specs, prices and release info inside

So, the accidental leak might’ve forced Godox’s hand, but now it’s official. Godox have announced the new AD600Pro portable strobe. And for the most part, things seem unchanged from the original leak, but now they’re available to pre-order in the USA, with a UK release coming soon.

The power consumption of the new AD600Pro is the same as its AD600 predecessor, but there are some important differences. The first is that, unlike the AD600, it appears that the AD600Pro is only available in TTL flavour. so, there won’t be a discounted manual only version. But what it does offer is faster recycle times, a much better bulb design, a vastly more powerful modelling light, and a redesigned bracket.

Godox accidentally leaks new AD600Pro strobe with much needed upgrades

Back in October, we reported that this would be on the way, a new Godox AD600 replacement. Now it seems the rumours were true, although there isn’t been an official announcement. Godox accidentally leaked it early this morning by publishing the new product’s page to their website.

That product is the Godox AD600 Pro, and it has a couple of quite significant upgrades over the current model AD600. While the actual 600Ws power consumption doesn’t change, the bulb design could potentially result in almost a stop more power. It has a full power recycle time of less than 1 second, and the modelling light gets brighter by almost two stops.
