Well, this is one that’ll make a lot of Panasonic GH6 users very happy. Every day in the Panasonic groups over the last few months since the camera’s initial release, I’ve been seeing people asking “When will the GH6 be able to record directly to SSD?!?!?”. Well, the answer is now. Wait, no, it’s not. Today is not the actual release. Today is the announcement that a release is imminent. The answer is September 27th, so you’ll have to wait another week.

The new Version 2.2 firmware supports direct recording and playback of videos and photos using an external SSD connected via USB. You can record onto drives of up to 2TB in capacity using Apple ProRes 422 HQ (Max 1.9Gbps) or high bitrate, 4:2:2 10-bit All-Intra. There are some caveats, though!

Well, now we have a definite date for the upcoming Panasonic GH6 announcement and according to a post on the Lumix Facebook page, we don’t have to wait long. The official announcement is expected to come at 8pm Eastern on February 21st, 2022 (1am UTC on February 22nd).

Panasonic hasn’t said anything about the impending new camera, although it’s rumoured to be Panasonic’s first mirrorless camera to contain Phase Detection Autofocus instead of the slow, unreliable (at least for video) and only-works-with-Panasonic-lenses-and-not-3rd-party Depth from Defocus (DFD) system used in all of their other cameras.

It’s the 20th anniversary of Panasonic’s Lumix brand of cameras this year. Today, in fact, is the 20th anniversary of their first cameras, the Lumix LC5 and F7. Lumix has come a long way in that time, and many have been expecting a Panasonic GH6 announcement today. According to a statement from Panasonic Japan,  though, it’s still in development.

Panasonic has launched a Lumix 20th anniversary website to celebrate the event, talking about not only the Lumix brand but Panasonic’s history with photography, which extends far beyond the last 20 years. It includes a number of innovations invented by Panasonic, like the world’s first optical image stabilisation system.

Panasonic director, Yosuke Yamane, in a video posted to the Panasonic Lumix Video YouTube channel has amongst other things, explained the differences between the goals and target market for the Panasonic GH5 Mark II and the Panasonic GH6 Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras.

The video was actually posted on May 26th, the day after the official launch, although it seems to have gone largely unnoticed. But it dives a little deeper into how the Panasonic GH5 as a product is diverging into what is essentially two separate product lines aimed at different types of user. Filmmakers and YouTubers.

Panasonic has now officially announced the new GH5 Mark II, along with development of the GH6. And while we’ve already seen all of the GH5 Mark II specs and know exactly what it looks like, let’s go over the differences vs its predecessor anyway, and talk about what little they’ve told us of the GH6 so far that they say will be introduced later this year.

The GH5 Mark II, Panasonic says, has been designed to address the latest issues of live video, with “built-in industry-leading wireless live streaming capability and high video performance”. It’s got a bit of a price increase over the GH5, though, at $1,700.

Panasonic has just posted to its Lumix Facebook page that “new GH series cameras are coming”. Yes, cameras. Plural. So, it looks like the rumours may have been true about seeing both a GH5 Mark II release announcement as well as a GH6 development announcement – I can’t imagine the GH6 will be launched just yet.

The cameras are to be announced during a live online event, streamed through YouTube on Tuesday, May 25th at 10am Eastern. An event has already popped up on their YouTube channel, embedded above.

Panasonic to announce GH6 development and GH5 Mark II launch tomorrow?

There’s been a lot of hype – for a couple of years now – about Panasonic releasing a successor to its GH5 mirrorless camera. Up until recently, that hype was surrounding a possible GH6. A whole new beast with all the latest bells and whistles. Then, a week ago, we saw a leaked spec sheet for what appears to be a (mostly the same as the original) GH5 Mark II.

Now, rumours are out that Panasonic will be announcing both cameras. The GH5 Mark II release and the GH6 development announcement. And those announcements may come tomorrow.

Full specs leak for the Panasonic GH5 Mark II – Yes, that’s correct, not the GH6

Well, this is a surprise. And not really the good kind. While everybody’s been waiting for Panasonic to announce a GH6, which is apparently, definitely on the way, the specs leak for a new Panasonic Micro Four Thirds camera. It’s not the GH6, though. Oh no, apparently it’s the GH5 Mark II. And it’s not going to have the specs people were expecting for a hypothetical GH6, either.

The specs have been leaked via Nokishita and, well, really, it looks like a pretty tiny incremental update over 2017’s Panasonic GH5. The sensor’s still the same 20.33-megapixel resolution, the max video resolution is 4K 60p, it’s the same 3.68m-dot EVF, and well, same everything really.

Panasonic GH6 to see a new 8K Sony sensor?

I’ve heard a whisper or two recently about Sony working on a high-resolution 8K Micro Four Thirds sensor. But they were a little difficult to believe with the shape that the MFT system is in right now. That being said, Panasonic has been dropping hints and then confirming that the GH6 is on the way. So, maybe the whispers are to be believed.

The folks at 43Rumors certainly seem to think they are, and they say they’ve now received confirmation from a source that there’s a new Sony Micro Four Thirds sensor on the way in 2021 that will shoot 8K video and offer a resolution of “30+MP”. Could this be destined for the Panasonic GH6?

“Stay tuned” says Panasonic director – The GH6 is coming

The hypothetical Panasonic GH6 has been long-rumoured with little but radio silence from Panasonic. And while the Panasonic GH5 was only released in early 2017, rumours of the GH6 have been around since early 2019. It’s started to feel a little like the Nikon D400.

Recently, in an interview with CineD, Panasonic Imaging director Yasuke Yamane suggested that a GH6 might be on the way. Well, now, Mr Yamane has confirmed that the GH6 is most definitely coming in a new video released by Panasonic explaining their vision for the future of Panasonic’s camera systems and the industry as a whole.
