GH5 Mark II

This totally unfair comparison pits the Panasonic GH5 II up against the RED Gemini 5K

As I was browsing through YouTube this morning, I spotted a new video from the folks at TheCameraStoreTV that looked quite interesting, pitting the new Panasonic GH5 II vs the RED Gemini 5K. And right after the introduction, I spotted a familiar face, my buddy Ryan desperately trying to not laugh at the antics of Noah from Glean Productions. So, I’m posting it here.

There are two ways one can take “this camera vs that camera” style content. The first is to see which is objectively “better” – which is what makes this comparison so unfair – and which is better for a certain target market or use case. The RED Gemini 5K pretty much hammers the Panasonic GH5 II in most every respect, but are there times when the GH5 II is better?

The Panasonic GH5 Mark II is expected to see similar autofocus performance to Panasonic’s full-frame S series mirrorless cameras. This is welcome news to Panasonic Micro Four Thirds users frustrated with the GH5’s lack of autofocus performance. But to be able to take advantage of the new autofocus system, your lenses are going to need an update.

Panasonic has released a flurry of firmware updates for a dozen of their Lumix G and Leica DG lens lineup to make them compatible with the upcoming camera’s autofocus system and they’re available to download and update now for you to prepare.

Panasonic director, Yosuke Yamane, in a video posted to the Panasonic Lumix Video YouTube channel has amongst other things, explained the differences between the goals and target market for the Panasonic GH5 Mark II and the Panasonic GH6 Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras.

The video was actually posted on May 26th, the day after the official launch, although it seems to have gone largely unnoticed. But it dives a little deeper into how the Panasonic GH5 as a product is diverging into what is essentially two separate product lines aimed at different types of user. Filmmakers and YouTubers.

Panasonic has now officially announced the new GH5 Mark II, along with development of the GH6. And while we’ve already seen all of the GH5 Mark II specs and know exactly what it looks like, let’s go over the differences vs its predecessor anyway, and talk about what little they’ve told us of the GH6 so far that they say will be introduced later this year.

The GH5 Mark II, Panasonic says, has been designed to address the latest issues of live video, with “built-in industry-leading wireless live streaming capability and high video performance”. It’s got a bit of a price increase over the GH5, though, at $1,700.

Side-by-side leaked photos show Panasonic GH5 II exterior is basically identical to the GH5

With an announcement expected tomorrow, it wasn’t much of a surprise that GH5 Mark II images have leaked early. Nokishita posted a couple of tweets leaking product photos of the GH5 Mark II over the last few days. Not surprisingly, there are no photos of a GH6, backing up the idea that if the GH6 is mentioned at all during Panasonic’s online event, it will simply be a development announcement.

But what can we see from the photos about the new GH5 Mark II? Well, not a lot really. It’s largely identical to the existing Panasonic GH5. It still has all the same buttons, dials and ergonomics, although a couple of the labels have changed.

Panasonic has just posted to its Lumix Facebook page that “new GH series cameras are coming”. Yes, cameras. Plural. So, it looks like the rumours may have been true about seeing both a GH5 Mark II release announcement as well as a GH6 development announcement – I can’t imagine the GH6 will be launched just yet.

The cameras are to be announced during a live online event, streamed through YouTube on Tuesday, May 25th at 10am Eastern. An event has already popped up on their YouTube channel, embedded above.

There’s been a lot of hype – for a couple of years now – about Panasonic releasing a successor to its GH5 mirrorless camera. Up until recently, that hype was surrounding a possible GH6. A whole new beast with all the latest bells and whistles. Then, a week ago, we saw a leaked spec sheet for what appears to be a (mostly the same as the original) GH5 Mark II.

Now, rumours are out that Panasonic will be announcing both cameras. The GH5 Mark II release and the GH6 development announcement. And those announcements may come tomorrow.

Full specs leak for the Panasonic GH5 Mark II – Yes, that’s correct, not the GH6

Well, this is a surprise. And not really the good kind. While everybody’s been waiting for Panasonic to announce a GH6, which is apparently, definitely on the way, the specs leak for a new Panasonic Micro Four Thirds camera. It’s not the GH6, though. Oh no, apparently it’s the GH5 Mark II. And it’s not going to have the specs people were expecting for a hypothetical GH6, either.

The specs have been leaked via Nokishita and, well, really, it looks like a pretty tiny incremental update over 2017’s Panasonic GH5. The sensor’s still the same 20.33-megapixel resolution, the max video resolution is 4K 60p, it’s the same 3.68m-dot EVF, and well, same everything really.
