Generative Fill moves out of beta and into the latest public release of Photoshop CC 2024

Adobe has decided that they’ve done enough testing with its Generative Fill feature. It was introduced into the Photoshop beta in June of this year. Now, three months later, it’s been added to the stable release of Photoshop CC 2024.

Don’t be so quick to celebrate just yet, though. It is limited in how much it will create for you. And after you hit your limit, speeds are throttled – unless you pay Adobe more money. It’s also still far from perfect.

Whip-pan transitions have been a staple in TV and movies for decades. They’re when the camera rapidly moves to the side, switching from one shot to another. We’ve covered how to shoot whip-pan transitions in-camera here on DIYP before.

But what if the footage wasn’t shot that way? What can you do? Well, if you’re Kyler Holland, you can get a little help from Photoshop’s Generative Fill feature.

Midjourney takes on Adobe’s Generative Fill with new inpainting feature

Midjourney has added a new inpainting feature that many users have requested. Much like Adobe’s Generative Fill, it lets you change only a part of your image that you manually select. As for the rest of the image, it stays intact. Of course, I just had to test it out, and I bring you some Midjourney images of cats and dogs I created with this new tool.

I don’t know if Adobe technically classes it as a bug, but there’s a bit of an annoyance with Photoshop’s AI-powered Generative Fill. Occasionally, It will pop up with a message telling you something has violated user guidelines.

You’ve no idea what it is or how they’ve violated them. You’re just told that it’s happened. Well, Unmesh at PiXimperfect has a solution for you to get around it.

Photoshop’s generative fill will steal your job…or will it?

Here at DIYP, we haven’t shied away from reporting on AI and image generators. It’s pretty difficult not to talk about it, as it seems to be the hot topic of 2023. Creatives are concerned about the new technology and whether it will soon make us all obsolete (basically, all my work could be replaced by AI!).

But are these fears real, or are our crazy artist minds just going into overdrive? It’s a genuine concern; obviously, we don’t have the answers yet. But perhaps it’s time for a little light relief. This video from Mango Street stares down the elephant in the room and adds a little comedy to the whole Adobe generative fill obsession. And it’s entirely on point.

Clipdrop has just released a new tool called Uncrop in a bid to compete with Adobe’s generative fill. Uncrop is essentially the same as Dall-E’s Outpainting feature. With Uncrop, you can change the ratio of any picture by adding an expanded background that perfectly complements the existing image.

Uncrop is built on AI-powered Stable DiffusionXL from Stability AI. You can try it out for free on the Clipdrop web app, and there’s no need to log in. However, you do get a limited number of tries.

The Generative Fill feature in the newest beta of Adobe Photoshop CC has caused quite a stir. Some label it as the worst addition to Photoshop ever, while others see it as a valuable tool that can help photographers tweak things they couldn’t fix at the time of shooting. And while there are areas, such as photojournalism, where generative fill is going to be a big no-no, there are other areas where it can potentially be of use.

One such area is real estate photography, and one photographer who sees it as a valuable tool is Kevin Raposo. In this video, Kevin shows us five ways we can use generative fill with our real estate photography. He also includes a lot of caveats and disclaimers, so be sure to pay attention!

Did you hear the news?

There’s this new fantastic AI tool in Photoshop that is going to… Blow. Your. Mind. Or is it?

Every top creator has been saying roughly the same thing about Photoshop’s new AI technology, which includes a Midjourney-like app directly in Photoshop they call Firefly.

They’re saying things like OMG, this is the best thing ever, blah, blah, blah.

Well, I’m not so impressed. I think it’s the WORST Photoshop update for photographers EVER.
