Slowing down everyday activities to make one second last for one hour

The Slow Mo Guys are back again, slowing down time. This time, it’s part 2 of something the boys did in 2021. Shooting at 90,000 frames per second and playing back at 25fps, they’re able to slow down time to 1/3,600th of its regular speed. This means that one second of real-time is able to be slowed down to precisely one hour. This presents a very unique view of the world around us and the events that happen in it.

Obviously, this concept proved popular last time they did it, so they’ve done it again. Slowing incredibly fast events down by 3600 times makes it very easy to see exactly what’s happening. Sure, 90,000fps isn’t quite fast enough to capture things like electricity arcing from a Tesla coil, but it’s still pretty fast and shows some everyday events in a whole new light.

What the world would look like if 1 second were slowed down to 1 hour

We’ve seen some pretty extreme slow motion from The Slow Mo Guys, and it’s all very impressive and often satisfyingly beautiful. But unless you’re quick with maths in your head, it can be very difficult to see just how that equates to in real-time. Even when they tell you “this clip was x nanoseconds”, like, how fast is that really?

Well, in this video, Gav breaks it down into more manageable speeds for our brains to understand. Thanks to the new Phantom TMX7510, Gav can shoot 90,000 frames per second at a respectable resolution. How fast is this in real terms? Well, when played back at 25 frames per second, one second of real-time gets stretched out to an entire hour.

Smashing car windows at 800,000 frames per second on the new Phantom TMX7510 camera

Gav at The Slow Mo Guys seems to have a problem breaking car windows. It’s not that he has anything against doing it, he just doesn’t seem to always be able to pull it off. But he’s decided to give it a go again for this video, where he puts Phantom’s new TMX7510 camera to the test, shooting it at 800,000 frames per second.

This is by far the fastest camera they’ve shot with on the channel – if you don’t count that insane 10 trillion frames per second thing – and at 800,000fps (1/32,000th real-time), it’s actually fast enough to capture the speed of the crack travelling through the glass – which on the piece of glass covered by the frame, happens in approximately 0.000181 seconds.

Gavin Free of the Slow Mo Guys is no stranger to Phantom cameras. In his time producing slow motion videos, he’s used pretty much all of the ones they make at some point. In this new video for their “Behind the Scenes” channel, Gavin takes a trip to Vision Research in New Jersey to see how they’re made.

Having donned his anti-static lab coat, Gavin, along with the rest of us, are taken on a tour of the production line. Starting with the bare circuit boards and resulting with a fully finished Phantom v1612, capable of capturing a million frames per second. We also see them testing out one of their new Phantom VEO 640 cameras with water droplets.

In the photography world, we’re used to the megapixel and high ISO races. When it comes to video, the race seems to be about frames per second. With frame rates getting ever faster, Vision Research are usually in the lead with their Phantom cameras.

It’s just a regular day at the office for the Slow Mo Guys, making things explode. In this case, Pyrex glass. Using a Phantom V2511, they begin filming at 28,000fps. They soon realised they weren’t anywhere near fast enough and knocked it up to an insane 343,915fps.
