Video games have been merging with photography for a while now, especially since the pandemic began. But what if we add language learning to the equation as well? For language nerds like me, a good language learning app or game is enough on its own. Throw photography in – and you’ll make me ecstatic!

Enter Shashingo, a video game that combines all three – playing a game, photography, and learning a new language. If you’ve ever wanted to learn Japanese and Duolingo just doesn’t cut it, this sounds like a great solution.

This seems to have become a big thing lately. Computer games foregoing the usual plain old boring screenshots and offering in-game “cameras” to let you position and compose your shot for a more pleasing image. Hell, even Mario Kart Tour has one. But what we’re starting to see now are games that are entirely based on shooting photos.

We featured one recently that’s actually a Photography Simulator (at least that’s the name of it), but Toem is a game where you play the part of an amateur photographer, going on expeditions and helping to solve problems by “snapping photos in [a] hand-drawn adventure game”. And it’s not for smartphones. This one’s actually for the PC.

Reddit user “ZoidbergRage” took a simple hotshoe mount adapter (like this one), mounted his GoPro to his DLSR and shot a college football game.

In the Reddit thread dedicated to this video, he describes the lighting conditions as terrible:

There were terrible lighting conditions so I shot in manual. It was dark clouds for 10 minutes then bright direct sunlight for another 10 the whole entire game .

And then goes on to describe his camera settings:
