Sony has now officially announced its hotly anticipated ultra-wide, large aperture 14mm f/1.8 G Master lens. This compact little lump of plastic, glass and electronics weighs a mere 460g and measures only 83mm x 99.8mm. They also boast its autofocus capabilities and a compact design “that has never before been realized in this focal length”. Sony does like to be dramatic, huh? Well, it seems they may have a right to in this case. On paper, the Sony 14mm f/1.8 GM is an impressive looking lens.

Well, if Sony are introducing a new Alpha A9 camera aimed at sports and wildlife shooters, you just know they’re going to announce a lens to go with it. And that they have, with the new FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6GM OSS lens.

It’s a full frame lens, featuring a double linear motor and Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor to keep it quick, accurate and quiet. Advantageous for both sports, wildlife, and video shooting. Sony claim it has “corner to corner” sharpness. Although, on a variable aperture zoom, I’ll wait until I can see the results for myself.

Sony’s new FE 85mm f/1.8 lens comes in at around half the price of the Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8. It’s also a third the price of the Sony 85mm f/1.4 G Master lens. We’ve already seen how the Sony & Zeiss f/1.8 lenses compare, but how does it stack up against the vastly more expensive Sony 85mm f/1.4?

Well, according to photographer Manny Ortiz, extremely well. He sees is as a fantastic option for both hobbyists and professionals who are looking to save a little money.

This is a question I see coming up almost daily on various photography groups on Facebook. “I shoot Sony, should I get the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM or the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art?”. Well, photographer Usman Dawood decided to answer this question by getting both of them. He wanted to see first hand which would better suit his needs.

In this video, we see his side-by-side comparisons of the two lenses and how they perform in the real world. Attached to his Sony A7RII, Usman talks about the good, bad and almost-non-existent differences between the two. Some of Usman’s findings surprised me, and from how he explains it, they baffled him, too.
