What is Unsplash?

It’s a website where photographers can share high resolution images, make them publicly available for everyone for free even for commercial use. It was created in May 2013 by Stephanie Liverani, Mikael Cho and Luke Chesser in Montreal, Canada.

Four months after creation they hit one million total downloads, and a year after they had more than a million downloads per month.

Now there’s 400’000+ high resolution images hosted on Unsplash which are shared by 65’000+ photographers from all around the world.

Last month 2400 photographers joined Unsplash and shared 25’000 new images (not just snapshots, some really good photography).

Seven self hosted alternatives to Flickr (and every other hosted image service)

Flickr had the potential to be what Facebook is now, unfortunately Yahoo squandered multiple opportunities to make something of Flickr, now Yahoo has decided to offload Flickr to Verizon which is just one of many reasons I have decided to discontinue using Flickr.

It’s a shame to be leaving Flickr because I like the way Flickr works and the way it presents my images but functionality and looks aren’t enough to keep me as a user. All good things come to an end sooner or later. Since I have a fair amount of experience designing, building, implementing, and maintaining web sites I have chosen to self host my images over moving to another hosted service.

I’m Giving my images for free

I’m a professional full-time photographer and I choose to let people download and use 95% of my images (even commercially), here’s why.

Who am I ?

I’m Samuel Zeller, a freelance Photographer from Geneva, Switzerland. I’m also an ambassador for Fujifilm and the editor of Fujifeed.

I recently launched my “Archive” a repository which contains nearly all my photography, organized by location and subjects. All of the images can be downloaded for free in high resolution (up to 6000px on the longest side).

Oh and they’re all under a Creative Commons license.

When David Hobby lets loose on a rant, it’s worth listening.  I mean, he’s usually a pretty reserved guy, but in a recent post on Strobist, he really lets the National Association of REALTORS® have it for asking permission to reproduce his work in exchange for credit (otherwise known as free).

If you’re a photographer with your photography online, you have probably experienced a request or two to use your own work for free.
