Samsung Semiconductor has announced its newest UFS storage tech. UFS 4.0 uses Samsung’s 7th Gen V-NAND memory and with a proprietary controller that offers some insane read and write speeds as well as big power savings. Interestingly, Samsung did not choose to announce this via their usual Newsroom website but through Twitter. There were plenty of tweets, though, going over some of its specs.

Samsung’s UFS storage is intended primarily for use in smartphones, although with the number of Android-powered devices out there and cameras that run entire operating systems and feature internal storage, there is a lot of potential in other markets, too. And boasting read and write speeds of up to 4,200MB/sec and 2,800MB/sec respectively, they certainly seem capable of handling the demands of today’s high-resolution cameras.

As the drop-in replacement for XQD and the logical successor to CFast 2.0, CFexpress is the hot new format that’s most definitely here to stay. But CFexpress cards are still relatively fresh and new… and expensive. But there is another option, as detailed by Joseph Nuzzo over on Photofocus. You can also use an M.2 NVMe SSD inside Sintech CFexpress Type-B M.2 NVMe 2230 SSD adapter. NVMe SSDs are significantly less expensive than CFexpress cards, allowing for larger capacities for less money while still being able to get the speed capabilities for which you need a CFexpress card in the first place.

About a week ago reports began circulating that SanDisk is looking to be bought out, with Micron Technology and Western Digital both showing interest.

Several hours ago it was officially announced the latter was successful in sealing the deal and the leading hard drive manufacturer will pay $19 billion in cash and stock to buy the leading flash storage solutions company.

With WD’s hard disk drives and SanDisk’s solid state drives and other flash storage products, the combined company will offer a broad range of products from the consumer level to datacenters.

The board of directors of both companies have approved the deal and it should go through in the third quarter of 2016, pending the approval of SanDisk’s shareholders.
