FiLMiC has launched a new and very cool app named DoubleTake. It’s is a free app that lets you shoot with two different iPhone cameras at the same time. You can choose between all available cameras on your device and simultaneously shoot two different videos with the same device.
FiLMiC Pro LogV2 update brings 12 stops of dynamic range and 140Mbps video footage
by Leave a CommentThe folks at FiLMiC Pro have released a new update that brings LogV2 to the app. It claims to offer up to 12 stops of dynamic range and provides footage bit rates as high as 140Mbps. Log first came to FiLMiC Pro in early 2017, but now it sees a pretty significant update.
According to the test video above from the iPhoneographers, LogV2 offers up to two and a half stops more dynamic range than the “natural” camera with the latest iPhone XS Max, and even the older iPhone SE and 6S see up to about a stop and a half increased dynamic range.
These are the 10 most important Android apps I use for my photography
by 5 CommentsI recently received my shiny new ASUS ZenFone 5, which just went on pre-order in the UK today. As an ASUS Brand Ambassador, I can’t exactly review this phone without it being perceived as a little biased (even if I’m being completely objective), so I’m not posting a review. But what I can do is show you how I use it to help me with my photography and the apps I use to do that.
These apps aren’t specific to the ASUS ZenFone 5. They should be available to users of just about any modern Android device. And some are even available for that other mobile platform. To illustrate the features of some of the apps, I went out over the weekend to shoot a video of them in use. If you want to miss my unboxing and get straight to the apps, then skip ahead to about 4:10.
The best settings to create cinematic footage on your mobile phone
by Leave a CommentFor some, the humble mobile phone is their weapon fo choice when it comes to shooting video. For others, it’s simply what they have with them at the time. But regardless of which category we fall into, we want to get the best footage we can. A phone’s only ever going to be so good, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make the effort. In this video from the folks over at Moment Lenses, we see how best to use Filmic Pro to get the most cinematic footage out of our phones.
Log video is coming to your smartphone with a new FiLMiC Pro update
by 2 CommentsFiLMiC Pro has been my go to app for mobile video for the past few years. Whether I want to shoot a quick personal clip or shoot some behind the scenes footage, it mostly works great. There’s one or two issues, like drifting audio and no ability to shoot 23.976fps (it does exactly 24), but it’s still the most useful video app out there.
One thing that’s a big problem common to all mobile video apps, though, is the contrast and colour typically provided by most phones sucks. The team behind FiLMiC Pro are getting around this by giving us a Log profile in future update, though. This produces an extremely flat shot out of camera, but allows for capture of more dynamic range. Filmmaker Matteo Bertoli got his hands on it early, and posted up some sample clips to YouTube.
DJI’s new Osmo Mobile handheld gimbal turns your smartphone into a smart motion camera
by Leave a CommentDJI have today announced a new product that doesn’t include a camera of their own; the DJI Osmo Mobile. Like the recently announced Osmo+, it’s a handheld gimbal designed for shooting smooth handheld video. The Osmo Mobile, however, steadies your smartphone. It also has a subject tracking feature which looks absolutely amazing.
The Osmo Mobile’s 3-axis motorised gimbal helps to smooth out movements from not only natural handshake, but also while moving. Whether walking, running, cycling, snowboarding or anything else, handheld gimbals are an invaluable way to take your footage up to that next level of quality.
Photographer invents a chassis to turn your iPhone 6S/6S Plus into a camera rig
by 16 CommentsI get the charm of shooting video on an iPhone, especially since picking up an iPhone SE. It’s small, it’s always with you, and the video it can produce is pretty impressive. But where my SE has the advantage of a slew of cases available that let me hook it up to all kinds of other video shooting devices, many 6S/6S Plus users do not.
The new Helium Core for the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus form factors not only aims to fix this situation, but takes things a step further by adding a whole bunch of 1/4-20 thread sockets allowing mounting your phone to pretty much any system you desire, as well as letting you to add microphones, lights, and other gadgets on top.
