This grip gives your Black Magic Pocket Camera enough battery to make it usable

When Black Magic announced their Pocket 4k camera, they started a race. A race for improving their crappy runtime being the best battery solution for the camera. And it’s a hard race to win. (technically, Black Magic said they would release a battery grip in September, but we are still waiting…)

I would say that every P4K battery solution has its ups and downs. The trick is to find the balance between size, placement, and battery life. IndiPro Tools think they’ve hit the nail on the head with their brand new Universal Power Grip. An all-in-one solution for power, usability, and convenience.

A while ago, we shared a practical solution for extending a Sony camera battery life with a power bank. If this is something you care about, the guys from The Film Look bring you an even cheaper way of doing it with big NPF Sony batteries. If you shoot film with a DSLR or a mirrorless camera, you should definitely have a look.

If you’ve been doing HD video you know how fast those batteries drain. The standard Canon LP-E6 and LP-E8 are 1,800mAh and 1,120mAh respectively which will shoot video for about an hour.

You can always have some spare batteries to replace the dead ones, but Chris Winter shared a pretty cool external battery hack that uses a 10,000mAh which is roughly 9 times the capacity.

Now, I am not sure if you can actually call off the shelf products a hack, but between the fast that you get so much more usage time and the clever way Chris mounts the battery with Velcro, I thought it is worth sharing.

Producer Forest Gibson was shooting a kickstarter campaign using a Black Magic 2.5K when the camera suddenly burst into flames. The crew immediatly left the location, but then came back using dump towels as (somewhat of ) protection.

Needles to say that the camera was toasted and beyond use. Sadly so was the SSD drive containing the footage shot that day.

I’ve mentioned the importance of mobile battery backup and charging in a few articles recently (see 10 Travel Photography Essentials and 10 Tips for Better Photography Conventions & Trade Shows), so I decided it was finally time to start taking my own advice. Let’s face it– “getting away from it all” sounds great in theory, but the reality is that most of the time we have to stay connected. And while location shooting, travel, trade shows, chasing down new business, and shuttling my kid from one activity to the next can all be fun and rewarding, they do tend to drain the life force out of phones, tablets, and laptops pretty quickly. While a car charger obviously helps, it doesn’t come anywhere close to solving the problem. That’s why I decided to try the Anker 2nd Generation Astro3 12000 mAh External Battery Charger. In a sleek- lightweight package only slightly bigger than my iPhone, this thing really packs a punch.[Read More…]
