Canon patent suggests boxy cinema camera is back on the cards

Box shaped cinema cameras are not a new idea. We’ve seen a number of them over the years from companies like Panasonic with the BGH1 and BS1H, as well as the Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera. It’s also a pretty major design feature of just about every camera from RED, too. We’ve also seen boxy cameras from Canon in the form of the ME200S-SH, but that’s designed for broadcast, it’s not a cinema camera, and it’s not RF mount.

The idea of a boxy Canon cinema camera has been around since at least 2019, but nothing ever seems to have come from it. Now, though, a new patent appears to show some potential development on a boxy Canon EOS Cinema camera. In fact, compared to the 2019 patent, it looks like it’s been developed a lot. There’s no news on when (or if) we’ll hear an actual release, but it looks very promising.

Canon EOS R7 C rumoured to be on the way, capable of 7K 60fps raw video, but not this year

It might come as a surprise to some, but Canon Rumors says they’ve been told that there’s a Cinema EOS version of the Canon EOS R7 coming at some point. It will have the same naming convention as the Canon EOS R5 C – the cinema version of the Canon EOS R5 – and be called the Canon EOS R7 C. Don’t get too excited just yet, though. It’s not expected to be announced in 2022.

So far, CR says that the Canon EOS R7 C will record 7K footage at up to 60 frames per second in Cinema RAW Light and offer the same codec options as the Canon EOS R5 C and Canon’s other Cinema EOS cameras. Other than that, there’s not really anything else in the way of possible specs so far, but it should be pretty awesome.

Canon has officially announced its video-centric EOS R5c and this beefy beast costs $4,500

The world has been expecting this camera for a long time and now it’s finally here. Canon has today announced the new Canon EOS R5c, a video-centric version of the Canon EOS R5 with active cooling (so you can actually shoot 8K for more than a few minutes) and a more streamlined UI aimed at video shooters.

Canon says that it combines the “best of both worlds” melding the EOS R5 and EOS C70 cameras into one – which you can see as soon as you turn the camera around to see how beefy it is compared to the EOS R5. The active cooling has meant that the camera is quite a bit thicker and from behind, more closely resembles the EOS C70 than its EOS R5 namesake.

The Canon EOS C70 is Canon’s first RF mount cinema camera – 4K 120fps (without overheating?)

We knew it wouldn’t be long before Canon finally started switching their cinema cameras over to the RF mount and they’ve finally done it. Today, Canon has announced the new Canon EOS C70 Super 35mm cinema camera. They say it’s in a “mirrorless-style body” although it actually looks a lot more like a big ol’ chunky DSLR than it does a little mirrorless camera.

It’s a pretty hefty little beast that offers Dual Gain Output (DGO) claiming an impressive 16+ stops of high dynamic range. Naturally, as it’s Canon, it features Dual Pixel CMOS AF and can shoot 4K DCI at up to 120fps (without overheating, though?) or a Super 16 2K crop at up to 180fps.

If you’ve got a hankering for some Canon 8K but you’re a little disappointed with the EOS R5 then have no fear. Now that 8K is at least out there in the Canon world, it’s seemingly going to become more common.

According to a report on Canon Rumors, Canon is set to introduce two new Cinema EOS 8K cameras in 2021. One will be a new flagship along the lines of the C700, while they say that the other will be a little more modular like the C300 and C500 lines.

Canon has announced its latest cinema camera, the EOS C300 Mark III. Contained within is a Super 35mm Dual Gain Output (DGO) sensor with up to 16 stops of dynamic range “for superior HDR recording and low noise”. As one might expect, it has an EF lens mount on the front which means it works with Canon’s range of EF mount photography lenses, but also cinema lenses, including 2.0 and 1.33 anamorphic lenses.

Canon announces its first full frame mirrorless camera – but it’s the $33,000 C700 FF cinema camera

It probably isn’t what people were expecting when Canon recently announced they were focusing on mirrorless. And it almost certainly isn’t the camera recently rumoured to be out testing with pro photographers. But Canon has announced their first full frame mirrorless camera. The C700 FF cinema camera, that is.

Yeah, ok, so all cinema cameras are mirrorless, really, but this one contains a 5.9K, relatively huge (compared to Super 35mm) full frame 35mm sensor. It works with EF, PL and anamorphic lenses, and if you’re using Canon EF lenses, you even get Dual Pixel autofocus. Canon announced the new camera along with a 10 minute video going over its features.
