Pete Souza calls out photographer Evan Vucci for copying iconic Obama photo with Trump

It’s hard to escape from the USA elections these days, no matter where you live. I don’t like interfering with politics too much, but I still found something that really intrigued me: a photo. Actually, two photos that look quite a lot like each other, and they were taken four years apart.

Former White House photographer Pete Souza noticed the similarity too, and he didn’t miss to point it out. In a recent tweet, he subtly called out photographer Evan Vucci for creating a photo very similar to an iconic image of Obama, only with Trump as the main subject.

Media photographer and camera man scuffle outside polling station

For those that don’t live in the UK, there’s a general election going on at the moment. Today is the day we cast our votes. This particular polling station is where Tim Farron, leader of the Liberal Democrats, happens to be casting his. And as is likely around the polling station of each party’s leader, the entrance is littered with the media.

It seems that here, though, a photographer and video camera operator couldn’t agree on who was going to be standing in a particular spot. They both wanted the same shot as he was coming out, but to quote Connor McLeod, “There can be only one”. A quick shove starts to turn into something a little more determined as this 18 second video plays out.

Candidate for Prime Minister Sued Due to Alleged Copyright Infringement

Yanai Yechiel was commissioned to photograph a politician running in the Israeli Labor Party primaries. Since it was a small campaign, there was a very limited budget and the photo was to be used only for the internal elections, he accepted the PR company’s request and did the job for a modest price.

You can imagine his surprise, and anger, when 18 months later he discovered the photo was being used as one of the main images in the nationwide campaign for the politician who is currently leading the polls for the general elections and may be Israel’s next Prime Minister.

The developments in this case emphasize the importance of having a written contract, clearly covering all your bases.
