DxOMark made a “realistic” mannequin to test out selfie cameras on smartphones

So, this kinda makes sense, but it also kinda creeps me out. DxOMark is a pretty well-known name when it comes to testing lenses, sensors and cameras. And that includes the cameras in your phone. In this case, specifically, the selfie camera. At least as of January of this year.

To help improve the tests, and standardising their process for consistency, they made a realistic mannequin selfie stand-in made from 3D scanning a real human subject. If you ask me, though, it has that sort of Westworld Vibe.

Xiaomi, a Chinese iPhone competitor, has beat out iPhone in the latest round of camera comparison. Well, at least according to the DxOMark tests. Comparing the new Xiaomi Mi9 and the iPhone XS Max, DxOMark ranked the Xiaomi higher, with the 107 overall score compared to the iPhone’s score of 105.

When DxOMark first added smartphone camera rankings into its database back way back in 2012, a lot of people thought it was just a prank. But no. For the last seven years, they’ve been ranking new smartphones as they come out to see which is the best of the bunch.

The process has evolved over the years, with new features and metrics added, but now they’re adding one more set of tests into the mix. And this one isn’t a joke, either. DxOMark is now going to be judging the front-facing selfie camera.

A few weeks back, DxOMark published their sensor rating for Nikon D850. The newest Nikon DSLR won the impressive 100, and now it “meets its mirrorless match.” Sony a7R III has also scored 100 at DxO’s tests, and it’s now it’s the highest-scoring mirrorless full-frame camera on DxoMark.

It probably wasn’t going to be much of a surprise for the new Nikon D850 to do rather well on DxOMark. The pixel peeper’s favourite website rates it as being the best overall sensor on the market, scoring it at a pretty perfect 100.

The 45.7MP sensor contained within the D850 is Nikon’s entry into the world of full frame backside illuminated sensors. It seems to have paid off, for the most part. At base ISO, it’s the best out there for landscapes and second only to the Phase One IQ180 for portraits.

Just days ago, iPhone 8 Plus took the first place on the DxO list, and then it shared the throne with Samsung Galaxy Note 8. But, according to DxO, Google Pixel 2 leaves both these phones behind. With the impressive overall score of 98, this now seems to be the best smartphone for “phoneography” there is, at least judging from DxO’s tests.

Back in February, we posted about Xitek’s testing of the highly anticipated Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens. Against the $4000 55mm Zeiss Otus, Sigma came out on top in comparisons and shocked almost every photography blog out there. Today, however, DxO mark put both lenses up against each other and it seems from their end that the Zeiss Otus hasn’t been ousted just yet.

A few months ago, Sony unveiled its new flagship smartphone: the Xperia Z2, which is still awaiting its release. One of the taglines for the phone called the Z2’s gear “the world’s best smartphone camera”. And it seems like the company may not be exaggerating at all. The phone just scored a 79 out of 100 on the DxOMark Mobile Scale, which puts it above Nokia’s 41 Megapixel 808 PureView as the highest rated smartphone camera out there.
