DJI have announced the world’s first Super 35mm digital camera designed specifically for aerial cinematography. The Zenmuse X7. It shoots 6K CinemaDNG raw video at up to 30fp. The X7 also features a new DJI Cinema Color System to maximise its 14 stops of dynamic range.

For aerial photographers, it’s also capable of capturing 24 megapixel RAW stills. Super 35mm means it’s an APS-C sized sensor. Currently, it’s only compatible with the DJI Inspire 2 drone, although future compatibility with other products is expected in the future. I wouldn’t get your hopes up about bolting this thing to a Mavic, though.

Stabilised 30x optical zoom on the DJI Zenmuse Z30 camera is very impressive

When DJI announced its Zenmuse Z30 camera a few months ago, it looked mighty impressive. Full remote control 30x zoom from your tablet or smartphone connected to your controller. You can’t exactly stick this thing onto your average consumer DJI drone, though, not even the new Phantom 4 Advanced. Aimed at industrial and commercial use, it designed for the Matrice series.

With 30x optical zoom and 6x digital zoom, it has a lot of potential. But with that kind of zoom, there were a few concerns about just how stable it would be at that sort of range. Well, they’re out in the wild now, and this test footage from PhotoFlight Aerial Media shows just what it’s capable of.

After recently introducing their first drone camera with optical zoom, the Zenmuse Z3, DJI have now announced the Zenmuse Z30. This camera features a 30x optical zoom, a major improvement over the 3.5x optical zoom of the Z3. Designed primarily for commercial applications, DJI see this camera being used for inspecting wind turbines and cell towers.

DJI is taking a square aim at commercial drone market rather than hobbyists or filmmakers. To scout difficult locations for firefighters or search & rescue at long range it’s an ideal camera. It will also aid in things like building inspection and surveying of locations impossible to reach after a major disasters.

Flying a drone in Sweden? Remove your camera first or you’re breaking the law

First reported by Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, the country’s highest court ruled on Friday that it is now illegal to fly drones with attached cameras in public places as they qualify as surveillance cameras. It’s a huge blow to Sweden’s hobbyist drone community.

Hobbyists in Sweden are understandably upset, and the initial reactions are about as would be expected. Now, to fly a drone on public land would require a CCTV permit as if you were monitoring a camera mounted on a pole in a city centre. You’ll need one of these permits each time you wanted to go out. Each permit comes with a cost and no guarantee of it being granted.

After a zoom feature appeared in DJI’s new Zenmuse Z3 drone camera, I knew it wouldn’t be long before we saw more. What I did not expect, however, was a camera that could give the range that this does.

The recently announced Walkera Voyager 4 boasts a rather impressive 16x optical superzoom lens. This puts it way beyond DJI’s Z3 and seems to pummel it into the ground. But, how good can it really be?
