DJI pulls the head off the Ronin 4D with the new Ronin 4D Flex

DJI has launched the new Ronin 4D Flex. Essentially, it’s an addon cable and set of accessories for the Ronin 4D that allows you to disconnect the sensor and gimbal module from the rest of the camera. This allows you to massively reduce the weight from the sensor end of the camera, not to mention size, letting you mount and use it in more places than would be possible with the standard Ronin 4D setup.

The Ronin 4D Flex opens up a lot of filming opportunities and makes rigging certain situations a whole lot easier. And while we’ve seen other cameras with removable heads like this in the past, this is the only one with native gimbal control, which expands those opportunities even further. Potato Jet’s had his hands on one for a little while and has posted a video going over its features and capabilities.

Well, here’s a surprise announcement, DJI is joining the L mount alliance. It’s not so much a surprise that more members are being added, as Panasonic Director, Yosuke Yamane mentioned that it may happen way back at the beginning of 2020. And making good on that suggestion, they added Leitz last October. But the fact that the newest member to join will be DJI is perhaps a little unexpected.

It kind of makes sense, though. After all, DJI has been starting to head more towards interchangeable lens cameras lately with the Ronin 4D and obviously, they make interchangeable lens cameras for some of their drones. But to eliminate any doubt about their intentions right away, along with the announcement DJI has launched a new L mount lens plate for their Zenmuse X9 camera.

Have you ever watched footage of people skiing and wondered how it was shot? Well, if you’re filmmaker Antoine Frioux you’ll likely be using some sort of gimbal to create incredible follow-shots of the action.

This time, however, Antoine decided to try out filming with a DJI Ronin 4D that shoots 8K video, just to see how it would come out. I must say the results are impressive, and the behind the scenes footage of him actually skiing whilst operating the camera is pretty incredible!

DJI has announced that its flagship cinema camera, the Ronin 4D 6K, has lost one of its biggest selling points; the ability to record ProRes RAW. Announced in October, the Ronin 4D 6K boasted internal recording of both ProRes and ProRes RAW, with frame rates up to 60fps. Now, though, that doesn’t appear to be happening.

Exactly why the ability is being removed is unclear. Y. M. Cinema suspects that it’s down to patents, however the DJI Ronin 4D (and the Zenmuse X7) are both still listed as official ProRes RAW products on the Apple website. Whatever the reason, it’s forced a $400 price reduction, reducing the Ronin 4D 6K combo down to $6,799.
